After thinking more about Amanchu!, I've become even more (pleasantly) surprised that it got a second season. First, I didn't think it was that popular or did well in sales. Second, the first season already felt complete to me; or at least Teko's development and growth felt complete. I suppose that the focus could shift more towards the new characters. I haven't read the manga so I'm very curious as to what direction the new season will take.

I was hoping for another season seeing that there was barely any scuba diving and it was all about Futaba getting her license to dive. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing some actual scuba diving adventures in the sea.

I wasn't a fan of the first season. I didn't hate but didn't love it either. Half the show had those dumb looking muppet faces. It got annoying and I think it was over used. I don't mind comical reaction shots, but that become Amanchu's crutch for comedy. It's like I was seeing Kermit the Frog for half the show.

The scuba lessons where my favorite parts of the show but it only dabbled in it. Obviously the draw to this show was the yuri bait & tease.

Yuri? This was the least yuri show about two girls I've seen in a while.

How can you tease being yuri by not being yuri?

Is my understanding of the term off base? I don't really watch a lot of these shows, but I got a slight yuri vibe from this one. Can we agree it's yuri-ish?

Ehh well if you want but really it's just not yuri at all to me, I mean if this is yuri then so is Magical Madoka because it has two girls who care about each other. I mean girls do care about each other without it being romantic.

So you think Yuri has to involve romance? I don't.

With that said we're nit picking on a loose definition now and it really doesn't matter. Also I consider Yuri on Ice to be Yaoi-ish most defiantly. They're not romantically involved but there's an deep connection between the boys.

I knew there was a reason I bought two copies of the first season (one for me and another friend who loves anime and is also a scuba instructor). now we just need a Grand Blue (Dreaming) anime.

My point is was it the intention of the creators to give off that "vibe" to purposely attract that audience to the show? In this case I don't think it was, obviously Yuri on Ice went for that audience, not that that audience isn't still drawn to shows unintentionally. I just never heard in reviews or the forum comments anyone ever saying anything like that about this show, it really is just about two girls' friendship. Just like this seasons Girls Last Tour I'm getting zero yuri vibes from that too.

This has been a good discussion and I totally understand your point. Whether it was up to the creators intentions or not I got a slight Yuri vibe from it. A lot of holding hands intensely, faces getting close to each other. Again the Yuri wasn't strong but I got a ripple of it.

I can't believe I'm getting into a long discussion about a show I considered a 5/10. Now I'm curious to see season 2 and if we get some muppet on muppet action.

If you wanted to read the manga, good luck- it's available in Japanese, and... Italian. (If you know of a source to get it in English then please send me an email, I couldn't find a legit one anyhow)
Amano's work is extremely popular, most of that being due to Aria, although in terms of story, characters, atmosphere, and writing I felt that Amanchu was far superior. Given that Aria has several seasons, it's somewhat not surprising- but it IS surprising because the subject matter of this anime is quite different than the typical teen anime. So yes, I'm super delighted as well, since shows like these are hard to come by.
