FuRyu announced during a livestream presentation on Friday for its The Caligula Effect game that the game is getting a television anime adaptation that will premiere in April 2018.

Plot Summary

In the original game's story, written by Tadashi Satomi, a virtual idol known as μ performs user-inputted songs and gains self-awareness through exposure to users' bitter feelings and dissatisfaction toward reality. Wanting to save humanity — which she believes is continuously suffering — she lures people to a virtual reality world called Mobius with her songs. She then imprisons them in Mobius, thinking they will be free from the suffering of reality and that all their wishes will come true. The game follows the nine members of the "Going Home Club," a club that was formed because the characters want to escape from Mobius and go home. The game's title refers to the "Caligula Effect," which is a pattern of behavior where one wants to see or do something more if it is denied to them.

Welp, that preview erased any doubt as to what direction this show will be going. Sometimes these kinds of shows can turn out pretty good, but holy hell is the edge laid on thick.

yeah, but since it's in a virtual world, will anyone really be killed?

If you get killed in the game, do you get killed in real life too? This is the question that must be answered.

I thought the preview was super hype, that song was awesome, starting out all whispery and quiet and then *boom* an explosion of noise. I'm looking forward to this, it might be an edgy edgefest but I'm accustomed to those types of anime at this point, so I'm just going to wait to see where this one goes.

I remember looking at the game when it released and deciding not to buy it (what with my huge backlog and all).
If the anime turns out good I might yet buy the game.

They're supposedly there for protection, so it would be counter to the main forces wishes to let them die. If it does end up having a theme like Angel Beats, then they may die and then just wake up the next day.

Sharon Apple's revenge. Seriously though, this does sound potentially interesting. As someone who just naturally digs shows about AIs and idols, I'm loving the concept and the preview looks (and sounds) pretty good too. I can definitely see that edgy vibe that some are complaining about though so we'll have to see how it actually comes across in full. I like that it does look fairly mature but I hope it's not just "edgy" for the sake of seeming mature.

I saw the premiere at Sakura-Con, and I must say that it has been quite awhile since I have seen so many questions raised in the first episode of an anime. I won't get into any specifics seeing that this is not a discussion thread, but I will say that it was a pretty interesting episode to say the least.

And this show is coming to Crunchyroll a week from Sunday as announced at that panel.
