I love the anime's with this topic of confusion. You really shouldn't ask why... because I like to confuse people online about my gender (however the profile shows my gender... or does it?... *plays Illuminati theme song* ) and I love guessing a characters gender. But don't worry I respect all genders, traps, and transgenders. I LOVE EM ALL!!! Ok enough of the weirdness. Now what anime character's gender were you most confused about? Mine was Saika Totsuka, I knew he was a guy but he is so feminine that I couldn't wrap my head around it. You?

Don't use "trap." It's demeaning.

The currently running A Sister's All You Need has an example that's potentially interesting, but has a character design that seems too obvious (and may be in-universe.) We'll see how it goes.

Ouran High School Host Club plays with this but the subs, at least, use the offensive "tranny." (Not fluent enough to call out their Japanese.)

I think Hideyoshi from Baka and Test was the first time I really took note of the trope. Or perhaps Jakotsu in Inuyasha, although it wasn't used for humor in Inuyasha.

Did they ever explain what Crona is? I think that's one of the few androgynous characters I know that isn't played for sexual comedy.

Alluka. Felix Argyle? They stated he was a male, and this contrasts with Crusch's "masculinity" quite well. (Though Crusch is sexy.) Hideyoshi? They stated repeatedly he is a male. Yukimura from Haganai. Perhaps a close second, given the plot twist with him, but that is more bad writing.

Alluka from Hunter x Hunter has both male and female prefixes applied to him by multiple characters, and I haven't read anything in the manga or in either adaptation that said Alluka was transgender, whereas everyone else is usually just a feminine looking boy.

So, most confusing? Easily Alluka.

I don't often get confused with the gender of characters, but there are some occasions:
Drifters

Gintama

Literally every character in Land of the Lustrous

Technically none of them have gender, but some use "boku" and everyone looks and sounds pretty feminine

+1 Thought same thing. Watching the cartoon back in the day, I heard a female voice, thought he was a she.

Not only that but he also has fancy eyelashes. Garfield doesn't.
