I fully agree. Nobody ever talks about how awesome mecha anime are. The first thing I did when I first got on Crunchyroll was go to the mecha section and watched Argevollen.

Heres a short list of mecha shows that shows how diverse and awesome the mecha world can be

Knights and Magic
Gasaraki
Buddy Complex
Valvrave The Liberator
Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt
Mazinger Edition Z
Majestic Prince
Active Raid
Schwarzen Marken
Broken Blade
Aldnoah Zero
Argevollen
Cross Ange
Captain Earth

If you think about it, Attack of Titan is a mecha show that just uses organic mecha.

**EDIT** Arnold, Majestic Princes is really underrated. None of the characters were the standard cliches, and none of them were left behind in characterization.

I liked Knights and Magic. I fully realize it was wish fulfillment for 12 year olds. Something I hope they would of done with the series is have Ernesti age. Seems like everything that happened in the first season would of taken at least a year maybe two.

Yes, Knights and Magic was cool. Yes its wish fullfilment, but for everyone that ever wanted to be the badass pilot of the mech unit. Im not criticizing your opinion, I just know that if I was Ernesti, everything would of turned out the same way, except that I killed Horacio Cojal

Wait, how in the world do you get that Votoms and L-Gaim are shallow? Both have some of the deepest and more interesting stories in anime!

I'm talking about war stories, not the overall stories of each anime that I mentioned. Besides, BattleTech is where all the deep and complex space opera war stories are at. I also know an 80s anime fanboy who also prefers this franchise's deeper and more complex war stories over any mecha anime. So yeah! he literally likes 80s anime (which he grew up watching on some dead French channel) and yet, he is disappointed in the whole mecha anime genre.

Furthermore, nobody really cares about Armored Trooper Votoms or Heavy Metal L-Gaim regardless or under any circumstances.

What about Knights of Sidonia? I liked it. The CG people sort of looked like balloons but it worked. The mecha scenes were great and it had a good story.

It's one of the few Anime genres I just can't get into with a few exceptions. Last one I tried was Knights of Sidonia and quit around episode 5

The only time I hear it discussed is when people are talking about Code Geass tbh

Mostly what's already been said. I'll add, though, that the genre is ancient with several mecha anime coming out each year. As a result, we've had so many great classics come out (Macross, Gundam, Geass, Gurren Lagan, Valvrave, Evangelion, etc.) that unless it's something truly special, it falls flat.

While it's really a matter of taste, I just have two points to make:

A) L-Gaim and Votoms aren't really war stories, their conspiracy stories. Both are about a man pulled into a long standing conspiracy and how they ultimately prevail over the conspirators.

Much like how Star Wars isn't really about the eponymous Star War. Episodes 4-6 are about a young man's coming of age and his conflicts with his father. Eps 1-3 are much like the aforementioned L-Gaim and Votoms basically being about a guy being caught up in a conspiracy.

The war in all examples I've mentioned is really only a background setting for the stories.

B) I must truly disagree that "nobody really cares about Armored Trooper Votoms or Heavy Metal L-Gaim regardless or under any circumstances".

I mean, besides the fact that how many people like said shows has no real bearing on their quality. Regardless, I do know of people who do care about these relatively niche and highly under-rated series.

But, hey, I loved G-Reco and wasn't thrilled with Gundam: IBO until halfway through it, so I understand my taste are completely different than that of most folks.

Personally, I blame Neon Genesis. That's when the genre shifted from 'let's watch the cool robots battle' to 'let's explore the depth and emotion of the MC'. After that, everyone was in a hurry to rip it off, so they filled the genre with metaphorical and metaphysical bullocks instead of focusing on meaningful action. I love the mecha genre and frequently say "I'm here for the hot mech on mech action". But when what happens between action sequences bores me or annoys me, I question why I'm watching it.

I actually really like mechas, but I won't go into a show just for mechas. So I haven't seen any of the Gundam series, or any Macross shows aside from Frontier. I loved Gurren Lagann, and to lesser degrees, Star Driver, Gargantia, and Code Geass.

I'm looking forward to what Darling in the FRANXX is going to bring us with Tauburn with boobs. Having unusual looking mechas is a big plus for me.

Because big robots aren't cool anymore. They were a fad, just like the current fad is "if you work harder than everyone, and yell a lot, your goals are rewarded" That or "wussy guy is popular for no reason but wants the girl he cant have. Also must save world from evil"

BBK/BRNK? do you consider that mecha? I liked that one, i've only watched the first season/series, but I found the ideas unique and liked that the mecha was alive in a fasion (so far from what I watched, I'm sure they get deeper into it, maybe not haha sometimes it's awful how they leave key parts unexplained haha.)
