Plot Summary

Seventeen-year-old Hajime Nagumo is your average, everyday otaku. However, his simple life of pulling all-nighters and sleeping in school is suddenly turned upside down when he, along with the rest of his class, is summoned to a fantasy world! They're treated like heroes and tasked with the duty of saving the human race from utter extinction. But what should have been any otaku's wet dream quickly turns into Hajime's nightmare. While the rest of his class are blessed with godlike powers, Hajime's job, Synergist, only has a single transmutation skill. Ridiculed and bullied by his classmates for being weak, he soon finds himself in despair. Will he be able to survive in this dangerous world of monsters and demons with only a glorified blacksmith's level of strength?

It seems like just about anything with Isekai is getting greenlit. From what I've seen of the manga, it's just a generic isekai story with a slightly edgelord protagonist.

I've heard mixed things about this story. Although I am excited for the opening act.

I've had the web novel bookmarked for quite some time now, but I never knew when I'd get around to reading it. I guess now that the anime is coming out I don't need to anymore, unless White Fox somehow completely butchers the series.

I've also heard mixed things. I've heard some people call it the generic power fantasy but others say it's pretty dark with a lot of suffering. I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say that

Anyways, White Fox is usually pretty good. That director hasn't really done anything significant from what I can see, but the guy on series composition is currently working on Girls' Last Tour (White Fox's current show) and has done scripts for many Jojo episodes. Not sure how he would handle an adaptation of a LN but so far I'm optimistic about this. But since this is apparently coming out in Spring, I have to wonder how long this will be and when Steins;Gate 0 is coming out.

Plot sounds interesting and a little different from the usual trapped in another world show. I'll keep an eye on this one but I'm not getting my hopes up

Promising studio, but the anime art looks like crap from what I have seen so far.

Well, this is a very highly rated series in Japan, so lets see what this anime brings.

Having read the main story from the light novels, I'm looking forward to this, though I'm not sure if I like Hajime's design.

I'm the first to trash "isekai" stories, as they seem to litter the otaku landscape (especially the WN/LN category), and are guilty of repetitive cliches. Arifureta is guilty of these cliches, but to it's credit, it was one of the originators. This WN was finished before most the others were thought about, and directly inspired them. It's one of the very few isekai stories that I thoroughly enjoyed.

So is there anything about the story that stands out above the dozens of other isekai stories besides being a progenitor? Starting a trend is all well and good, but doesn't amount to much if dozens of stories have already eaten it's proverbial lunch by being aired first and offering some sort of twist on what's become a very tired story structure.

The opening phases and the amount of character development the MC goes through hooked me pretty well. And all the other characters, while not necessarily unique, have their own arcs and character development. Most other isekai stories have the MC as an immovable rock development-wise, with cookie cutter characters that never change or grow. I'm not saying it's an incredible or novel work, but as far as isekai stories go, I enjoy this one more than most.
