Is greed and personal ambition neccessary for contentment?
Posted 12/6/17
I'm genuinely curious to know for my own research.

Would you call it " a strong leader who can get things done" as your answer?

Side question: Do you think greed and profits the sole driving force for contentment or can contentment occur for just loving your job and being a decent person overall no matter how high or low.

As always play nice children and conduct yourselves civilly.

Edit:Miss: Social Darwinists we can fight our basest natures so shut that up before talking, thank you! ^_^

It may be those who strive for profit no matter what the cost are never content as they fear they may lose it all. "status anxiety" seems to rule the western capitalist system.
Buddhist thought is that all life is suffering, brought about by desire (to be richer, "better", more in control) . Control is just an illusion and 'strength' is used to justify that sense of control to others, as governments do, they never want contentment because then they would be out of a job.

But then again who gives a crap what I think?

I'd argue it's the very nature of what life is. But then again we need to define what 'greed' is. If our basic definition falls in line with 'excess' then my ethics on this question changes a bit. I think the very thing that separates a human from all other life is its ability to not be excessive though it is in our general ability to be so.

Biologically all primates and close ancestors commonly adopt a selfish attraction from our brain development. It allowed us to survive and thrive. But things change. Is excess still necessary for survival? I'm inclined to think it's not... More accurately I hope it's not because it's not sustainable with how big we've become unless we answer some very important questions.

No. Being content with anything you have is up to you. Being content and happy is your own choice that is independent from the outside world. Happiness begins within you.

Hard to say. I have always lacked ambition and i have never been greedy. I know that if had more of those two things that would have more money in my bank, would have been screwed over less (probably), would have had more sex, etc.
I have spent most of my life being/feeling fairly happy/contentment. But i cant lie, iam not overly thrilled with my current situation/where i am at right now.

But without ever having had much ambition and without having have ever been a greedy person i guess i will never know? But as i said before, most of my life i have been happy and felt really good about where i was at.
Not in recent times so much though.
As for the side question, i have had the feeling of contentment, absolutely, simply by being happy with my job and feeling like i was a decent person.

But loving my job wore off and i lost my job and now i have more money than i have ever had and yet i dont feel all that happy. Plus now sometimes i regret being so much of a "decent person" and sometimes envy people with such ambition.
I also question at times if i am as "decent' of a person as i always felt i was.

Iam glad i am not a greedy person though.

Greed and ambition are validated from without, contentment from within. Greed and ambition are satisfied only once someone has decided upon a mark that they can call enough, otherwise it's a perpetual journey for more. Contentment can be found in the simplest of things, but only if those simple things are enough for someone. The key is to find the balance between the bliss of rest and the thrill of the hunt.

If I had certainty that I'd have enough to eat, a safe, warm place to sleep that I could be assured of from night to night, enough entertainment and rest to keep me sane, and assurance that what I was doing was legitimately contributing to the advancement of humankind's progress, "wealth" would have absolutely no meaning to me. So you've got a bigger boat, a bigger flat, a shiny gold statue? So what? Why should I give even 1/1,000,000 of a damn?

I just don't understand those in the rat race. I honest to God don't.

You can't change what the world wants, and you can't change what the world has to offer.

Ambition is the only thing that keeps me going. Change can only happen with an idea, it is the responsibility of the individual to follow through.

The first thing we need to realize is that there's not a dam thing you can do about how the way everyone lives.

Greed, for what? Greed gets you lies. Karma can join in at any point in time, but people still do it.

If I wanted to be happy, you would find a way without stepping on people, live your life, let them live theirs. If there is opposition; humanity will always provide us with someone who rises above.... so let me ask, if we didn't want to do something for the good of humanity, why does it happen? We had to lose something In order to live a peaceful life, to take on ambitions you must live life with purpose. Greed never had a purpose, only until we depended on it to carry ourselves. What can we even consider to be of value to us without realizing the world around us has just as much potential for most people.

Not everyone can have it all, does that make their life any less worthwhile? Why not see what it means to be alive

I wouldn't think so... I'd actually say greed would make you uncontent (more so than personal ambition since that depends on how far you take it)
