So now there is a campaign finding Apu from the simpsons to be an offensive character because of stereotypes. A hard working convenience store owner paying for a large family with a funny accent is now offensive for some reason. Here is a perfect summary of the situation:

I find this to be absurd. Every character in the Simpsons is a stereotype of some sort and trying to exclude Apu from the stereotypes is in itself offensive since that is saying Indians must be separate and unequal. So what do you think about this?

I'm going to hazard a guess that what you're referring to, Rujikin, is based off the recent documentary, The Problem with Apu.

For which the point is less the stereotype itself as the widespread adoption of the caricature by wank-hards as a default slur for anyone of South Asian decent.

You should travel to the campaign's HQ, shoot them and show them the righteousness of your complaint; he says in a sarcastic tone

What? A stereotypical character in a show that is founded upon caricatures is, in fact, a stereotype!? Who'd a thunk it!? You know, considering that The Simpson's has been around for almost twenty nine years, I'd have thought that most everyone would have figured this shit out a long, long time ago. The only reasons why Napu is suddenly offensive enough to warrant an outcry are convenience and subterfuge.

Well. Having that many children kinda made it go to that place, but Apu is activley hating on americans and their life style, so I guess they don't mention that eh.

Whatever, I thought he was funny. Guess it doesn't matter what other people think though.

He's definitely a stereotype, and a funny one. When has the The Simpsons been politically correct? Should we start censoring shows like South Park and Family Guy as well? It will never happen, and it's a dumb argument.

I feel like you go looking for this stuff though, maybe to find something to piss you off and reinforce your political opinions. You and the author of the article have that in common at least.

I'm actually going to watch the documentary. I'll report back on what's actually in the documentary. I have doubts that the focus of the documentary is calling for Apu to be removed.

For one, the last time Apu even headlined an episode was 2014. He hasn't even made an appearance period for two years.

https://simpsonswiki.com/wiki/Covercraft

Prior to that, I looked through all the episodes he made appearances in up to 2012 and I don't even see him mentioned in any plot summaries.

But, given the tone of the documentary, what it is referring to is the convenience store gags in the 90s. Hell, I don't even see references to the episode where it shows his family or when he lived with the Simpsons or whenever we got to explore the complexities of his character. It's mainly the "Thank you, come again" and the Quik-E-Mart that is the main issue.

I mean, I grew up watching Simpsons. I definitely quoted Apu's "Thank you, come again". Tons of people quoted that. And it doesn't surprise me that it was used to harass people.

Hell, even the voice actor for Apu even admits he was concerned about how offensive the accent was in the 90s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e641aQp8zGI

So I mean, yeah, he really is a racist caricature created by and voiced by white people. Why is it wrong to talk about that? Is Apu something sacred or something? I'm not buying it.

But, again, I'm going to watch the documentary. I love the Simpsons so it's probably going to be really interesting.

Try to find a show that doesn't have any stereotyping or racism these days. The Simpsons have been on for years and years. It's been on for some of it's actors entire lives. It has been stated before that Apu is not the only stereotype in the show. At the same time I feel that it has run it's course and that The Simpsons should now retire after holding quite a high place in the longest running animated show on tv category.

since he's Indian and not Mexican... guess some folks have never seen a person from India. poor delusional "warriors". if they find the simpsons racist let's hope they avoid family guy and american dad, because it's a race bait an episode (sometimes several times within the episode). and this season of family guy alone has gone into the "dark" aspect of racist a minute. fascinating how cartoons seem to upset people, yet they don't bother to attack Japan over how they draw their characters, very interesting indeed.

Japan has a huge amount of racist issues and they are regularly heavily criticized for them. It's very interesting you aren't aware of this and also seem to have a bone to pick with SJWs.

Sorry snowflakes, but the rest of us (normal, not-so-easily offended) people think the show is funny and don't care if you're offended.
Don't like it? Don't watch it. Simple as that

Why are stero types offensive when they're done with the intention of being funny and/or they're accurate?
Shit loads of Indians live in Australia, I've worked with many Indians. Shit loads of Indians are taxi drivers and shit loads of Indians work in service stations. Service stations are pretty much convenience stores, whys that a bad thing, why's that offensive?
Suggesting Indians dont talk like that or eat curry or work in those places would be the same as suggesting that Indians dont like cricket. And believe me, they love their cricket. It's above religion to many of them.
Many of them do have big families as well. of course not all of them are the same. Big deal?
In Australia we're(us whities) are stero typed to be lazy and beer guzzlers and bogans. Shits funny.

Coming from indian ancestry when I first saw the Apu in the Simpsons. I was like 'OH WOW AN INDIAN PERSON IN A SHOW!' and yes while the accent is a little exaggerated, NONE OF US CARED because it's a COMEDY and a CARTOON!!

We were more interested in episodes that expanded on his character like how he had an arranged marriage. (my parents were arranged) and other things.

if you thought the accent was funny and offensive. You only think relative to the culture and environment you grew up in and are obviously so afraid of insulting anyone you PC everything.
