It's based off of the novel of the same name.
It isn't a terrible novel, either (I enjoyed it).
The film will likely have some gaming references (modern day ones) but the novel was filled with 80's films, music, and video game references.
Since the book had a lot of Spielberg's films as hard references, he (Spielberg) decided to remove all but one or two (mostly "Back to the Future" and the DeLorean, as far as I know) from the film to avoid looking too egotistical.
He's updated some of the references, with the help of the author, to modernize it to the 90's and current day too.
We'll see how it all plays out in the end.

Err...I liked the book it was written pretty well and had no idea a movie was being made, expectations where high for the film but after that trailer it dropped just now. Just to many cliches, tropes, and memes coming to my mind because it is set in a video game world. Pretty sure "Arrow to the knee" was in the book, but Iron Giant, 80's movie trope, and seeing to many filler easter eggs....meh, better off left in a book.

i hate to be 'that guy' but i think the book is already better. they couldn't get the rights to use Ultraman, which was pretty important in the book. not to mention Leopardon.

Yeah, it was disappointing to find this out.
It appears that there is a legal battle going on (in Japan) over Ultraman, so that prevented any real discussions about using him in the film.
The Iron Giant is replacing him in the film but not sure how that will work out if his opponent remains the same (it won't have the same "feel" at all).
It kind of causes a bit of a desynchronization from the 80's nostalgia by throwing in The Iron Giant (and fits closer to the mid-to-late 90's kids who were born in the late 80's/early 90's).
With that said, The Iron Giant was based on a book in the 60's (written by Ted Hughes) and Ultraman came out in 1966.
It became more accessible to Americans in the 80's and 90's since that's when we started seeing a "natural flow" of Japanese films and shows coming out over here, to some degree (which is why Cline wrote about it to begin with since he enjoyed these things in the 80's).

The book is always better than the film, always.
As someone who's watched a lot of films that were based on some of his favorite novels (including "Ender's Game"), the idea is that you have to realize that the movie is meant to be a bit of a tribute to the book.
No tribute band is as good or better than the original band that they're copying, close but never quite hits the mark.
That's the same thing with films based on novels.

Looking forward to the movie if it's half as good as the book was.

I really didn’t like the book much at all, I stopped reading it, I doubt I’ll be watching this.
