Oh, and to actually post my most reviled character in anime....

It's Hikaru from Kimagure Orange Road.

Not only is she just annoying as hell, but she cockblocks Madoka & Kasuga to the point where I just cringe every single time she's on screen. And she just artificially keeps the show going for more and more episodes. Actually, I hate just about EVERY character in KOR, besides Madoka (it's still kinda grating when she can literally do anything she tries at mastery levels, but, I'll let the Mary Sue qualities pass.) & the cat. Jingoro is the coolest cat in anime (that I know of.)

You asked why people hate Shirou but you hate Sasuke. They're both the same in the regard that they're scarred by their past... Badly.

I watched the fate series but I didn't get annoyed by him at all. I just saw him as a helpless person and kinda had pity on him. What exactly is it that people don't like about him?

Sasuke is just a lame ass kid who sacrifices everything he "cares about" to find his brother. Then he learns the truth and continues to be stupid about it. I get it, I get it. If that would have happened to me, what would I have done better? well, for starters (at least after learning the truth) I would have tried to avenge my brother by killing or harming THE PEOPLE who did this to him and not a whole village (that dumbass) hello? kids? women? people who have nothing to do with it? I think he just went pass sanity at one point.

It was so annoying hearing him say over and over again "my hatred" " hatred" "hatred" "power" blah, blah blah.

So stubborn!!

So, when at like age 9 (?) you come home to see your entire CLAN, including your PARENTS, are wiped out in gruesome fashion, you're like... What the fuck. Then you find out, that of all people, it was your precious older brother who did it, the person you are most jealous of, but admire like nobody else. He tells you all of these awful things that are out of character for him, and he leaves. So, your parents are dead, your clan is dead, and your (more or less) cousin Shisui was "killed". ALL by the same person. In cold blood, for nothing but to obtain power. Do you realize how much that'd fuck you up? The same exact thing goes for Shirou, but Shirou HAD someone there, to literally help him survive his situation and love him, and nurture him. Sasuke didn't. This kid grew up on his own, just STEWING over one of the most traumatic events that could happen to a person in the Naruto verse. He grows up, obsessed with power, doing this, and that, hurting his friends all to complete ONE mission, his raison d'être so to speak, and he learns that it was all a fucking sham. That his brother was the good guy, and the Leaf higher ups (specifically Danzo) fucked up when it came to deescalating the situation with the Uchiha's planned coup, literally discriminating against his people and not only segregating them from the rest of the Leaf, but capping where their influence of power could be, that's beyond messed up. That's 2 major "what the fuck is my life?" moments, both at important development stages of a child and teen respectively. To be real, his anger and what should have been complete madness were displayed pretty shittily in my opinion. Could he have been a BIT ridiculous with wanting to kill EVERYONE in the Leaf? Perhaps, but you've got to understand that hate blinds people, and I think Sasuke went mental for a good while, so that didn't help. That's just my two cents. Sasuke probably should have died for his goal, the whole realizing he was wrong after losing thing was just stupid lol.

If you still want to hate him, by all means go ahead, I probably can't change your mind. Just know him and Shirou more or less have the same past, but different upbringings after their traumatic events. And the VN of Fate/Stay Night goes more into depth about Shirou's PTSD I THINK. Not sure.

I see what you did there my friend.
Actually, I liked your explanation and I fully understand the situation sasuke went through.
I think my hate for him was just building up as the anime went by (cuz I started watching it almost as the shippuden part started). Watching him do such stupid things over and over again (of course, cuz he was mental) made me lose my patience (because fillers and delays) and annoyed me to the point I got to hate his guts.
Maybe, I think, one of the things that annoyed me the most (reason why I hate him even more) is the need everyone had to save him at all costs. I freaking thought it was going on a yaoi direction with Naruto all obsessed to get him to be his friend again.
And sakura... ugh. have never seen such masochism.
Anyways. No one wanted to seriously kill him even after all he did. What is he? the cure for fucking cancer? maaan just get over it already! he was your friend but he tried to kill you all MORE THAN ONCE and didn't even hesitate. Why should you?

that's my opinion of course.

Natsu from Fairy Tail. If the series didn't have him I'd watch the whole thing. But he just gets right under my skin like nothing before.

I for sure could never understand the dedication everyone had for trying to get him back to the village, it was ridiculous. I would have given up on him or killed him at that point. But that's if I was like everyone else and didn't know the full story (I'm not sure Naruto ever learned the full truth.)

Biba from Kabaneri comes to mind most strongly
He just was terrible. Pretty much hated the second half of that show.

Easy Happosai from Ranma 1/2 as he's a one trick pony that got old the first time you meet him.

I started watching Ranma recently, I agree 100%
Happosai-based episodes are a total waste of time.
I hate molester characters in general

Eh, she's not that bad. I felt kinda bad for her, especially during the movie. She is pretty much in a relationship first with the guy and Ayakawa is like the 'other woman'

Anyone old enough to remember loathing Hikaru from KOR is easily old enough to remember being gratingly repelled by Ryuunosuke's dad from Urusei Yatsura:

Genma Saotome on Ranma 1/2 was more lovable, less creepy, sane, and more harmlessly deserving of being a mutual punching bag.

Happy does get one redeeming moment in S4, when he meets a cute girl unaware of who's been stealing lingerie, and tries to "reform" himself as a respectable senior citizen:

Most hated? That's a tough call. The most evil characters in anime I view as typically being also very interesting characters, which I do not hate (though if they were real and I suffered under them, I certainly would hate them).

I tend to only hate characters that are "badly written," which...begins a list too long to count. Characters like Shinji from Fate - while evil and obnoxious in every way - are actually very well written. They are the sorts of characters that are designed specifically so that you LOVE to HATE them, which makes me a bit forgiving of them, though many others take their hate for fictional characters too far.

So as far as characters I actually hate that are badly written, Natsu and Lucy from Fairy Tail are two of the worst offenders among series I know much about, but pretty much every character in that show is horrendously written.

I see a lot of people here hate Natsu or Naruto or other main characters that they find "annoying," yet their immaturity and "annoying" bits are pretty integral to their character, and don't speak of bad writing or of any real faults I find worthy of hatred. Though Natsu is a bit one-dimensional, in particular.

Shirou from Fate some people seem to hate because he's "naive" or something - yet his character growth (at least in UBW) in trying to live up to his ideals when thrust into a life or death battle seems perfectly acceptable to me, and I don't get this hatred at all.

Sasuke seems annoying, but those who claim he acts "irrationally" have no idea what they're talking about. Sasuke's "irrational" acts are highly justifiable from a character point of view, considering the trauma he went through in his youth, and seem an odd reason to hate him as a character.

Maybe I'm just not good at hating fictional characters, though. I can't hate a character in fiction if they are well-written and/or interesting, especially if they fit into the setting. No matter how "terrible" they are, I'm not about to hate a fictional character - I'm much more likely to hate the author of said fictional character who is so bad at writing. Many other people have a much easier time hating fictional characters, to the point that the moment one of them does something they dislike, they write off that character as "bad" from that moment forth, and will irrationally hate on them for the rest of the character's existence.

This happened with Sakura in Naruto, for example, after years of people complaining she was "useless." Yet she ends up being one of the most useful characters in the show - consistently - in terms of her contributions to battles and to the plot, objectively speaking. Her only "useless" point is in not measuring up to Naruto and Sasuke (who essentially are dual protagonists), which can be said of just about every character in the series. Others hated on her for being initially shallow and obnoxious, yet for the second half (if not more) of the series she is actually quite mature and reasonable for the most part as a character, so this only reinforces my idea of people forming an early negative opinion of her and refusing to change it.
