Log Horizon would be more or less as popular as it is. There is a very small overlap between fans of Log Horizon and fans of SAO. Fans of Log Horizon are usually also fans of .hack// which has received pretty decent popularity over the last 15 years ever since .hack//sign aired in 2002 and then the JRPG franchise took off.

Fans of SAO tend to think Log Horizon is too boring, and fans of Log Horizon / .hack think SAO is a dime a dozen harem.

If SAO was never a thing, then there would be fewer over all anime fans, but Log Horizon's fanbase would still simply be starved .hack// fans.

That’s fair. I’m pretty circa 2010 with a couple exceptions. I appreciate the non flamey response as it wasn’t meant to be a flamey question. Outside of when it was airing I only see it mentioned as the SAO counter anime so it got me wondering that.

You can watch the .hack// animes on CR if you are interested.

The first one .hack//sign is here http://www.crunchyroll.com/hacksign

There are 4 .hack anime on CR and they are technically sequels to one another, but there are games in between them so you can't really just go from one to the next.

(1) .hack//sign
(2) 1st set of games
(3) .hack//legend of the twilight bracelet
(4) .hack//roots
(5) 2nd set of games
(6) PSP game
(7) .hack//quantum
(8) .hack//sekai no mukou ni (CG movie not on CR)

A lot of people call .hack//sign a 'talking head anime' which it is for the most part. It's more about the interactions of people who play an mmo together than it is an adventure anime. If you like character development, it has shit loads of that. Also has a great soundtrack (same composer as SAO). It's very atmospheric. Every anime that particular director has worked on (Noir, El Cazador De La Bruja, Tsubasa Chronicle) is always very atmospheric with intricate dialogue and a heavy focus on music.

SAO is so so. Log Horizon is too boring. The first season was ok, but the second was extremely low paced. I couldn't finish it, even though I pushed myself to watch it.

Dot hack>SAO

Your opinion=SAO's quality.

SAO is dysfunctional as both an anime and on the logical premise the entire series is based around. There's nothing that can quite compare to how poorly thought out and generally bad SAO is to any other anime, and comparing any other anime to it is insulting. SAO is in every way shape and form a failure of both an anime and a concept that people who enjoy tasteless power trips eat right up. Neither comparison you have presented make sense to me in any way shape or form, but that's just me.

I mean you do you. You're free to enjoy what you will enjoy and I am in no way implying that it has any statements on the quality of the people who enjoy it, but my goodness I couldn't stay quiet reading this. I've lurked for a long, long time and this is my first post if not second or so IIRC. I've never heard such a ridiculous thing, comparing ANYTHING to SAO is like comparing water to paper.

? ? ?

...don't post if you don't have anything decent to say

who are you, the thought police? He/she can post anything they want to say, as long as its on topic and they feel passionately towards it.

Why don't YOU not post unless you have something ON TOPIC to say? lmao the nerve of some of these people.. who would never typically say that kind of shit face to face.

While I think Bobland's criticism is incredibly vague, my pet peeve here is the "right to" fallacy. Criticism does not equal an attempt of censorship.

Ahhh yes... Here we go. That's why I thought it looked familiar from a year ago.
