Neon Genesis Evangelion is amazing. Everyone says so, or enough people have said so for many years that the idea is etched into my psyche. It changed the game.

I've never seen a single frame of it. And now I'm screwed, apparently.

I nearly said that...but I have watched a few episodes. I didn't really like what I saw, but I don't think I started it from the beginning, One of these days I will have to just give it a chance and start from the beginning, because it is so popular. That is if I can find it streaming or for a reasonable price.

Then again, "Akira" is considered the pinnacle of anime as well. I've seen "Akira" twice (maybe two different versions) and both times I just thought the story was a whole bunch of nonsense, the kind of nonsense that anime is often stereotyped as.

I've watched plenty of other highly thought of anime and just didn't care for them.

That's the thing about something you've never seen. If you are basing your perception about how great it is on what others say, you may end up watching it and utterly hating it.

There are a few anime out there that I have not watched, but I have seen clips on Youtube, or I have read the source material, and from that I think they should be good.

There are others that I've never watched because I took an extended "break" from anime for some years during the time they launched, and by the time I came back, they were so far along that I'm just not interested in the time investment at this point.

For that reason, I've never seen any of One Piece or Naruto. At all. And at this point, I doubt I ever will. I've watched like three episodes of Fairy Tail and haven't been motivated to continue.

Not including those for which I have watched at least one episode...

Going by MAL, Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Going by ANN, Ruroni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal OAV (not sure an OAV should count. If not, then LOGH)
Going by Anidb.net, also LOGH
Going by Anime Planet, Haikuu!! 3
Going by Kitsu.io, also Haikuu!! 3
Going by IMDB (having at least 5000 votes) Neon Genesis Evangelion
Going by animegauge, Hajime no Ippo

Not generally interested in sports, or space/mecha battle genres, but there are occasional exceptions.

dunno because I haven't seen it

I'll just go with Mushishi though. I'm pretty sure it's something I'll love, but I want to finish Natsume first before I get to it.

I'm going to base this on the number of copies I've been through. they go in this order: Witch Hunter Robin, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Wolf's Rain and two movies: Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery service. I have more but they seem to make DVDs better than they use to.

that's a really good answer, the very best anime, i could say Hajime no ippo for manga

but for anime i have no idea, one of the anime that hyped me up the most was bleach, but it's not my fav anime.

i guess my favorite anime is Cowboy Bebop, sick animation for it's time, cool Jazz and Blue songs.

Fate/Zero - I hear great things about it all the time. I did watch the first episode but never picked it back up. That first episode just seemed all over the place and I didn't really "get it". Like WTF is this show about?

There is a bunch of them, but Cowboy Bebop probably stands tall out of all of them. Steins Gate is there too although I bought the bluray/dvd combo when it was on sale on Amazon a couple days ago. I'll start that series soon enough.

One Piece and anything good with Mecha in it. Mecha, stretchy arms, and weird faces ruin immersion for me.

This is what happened to me with Sword Art Online and A Certain Magical Index. Other folks loved them, I listened, it didn't work out. I didn't make it farther than six episodes into either one.

But on the other hand, I started the Monogatari series on the strength of hearsay, and haven't regretted that at all. I sometimes love quirky, stylized stuff, and it's been playing my song so far.

Anyway, back on topic, I haven't seen FLCL either. Lots of people say it will blow my damn mind.
