See, I've been wanting to check out Railgun, and I've heard good things. Does it stand on it's own without Index, or is this a "eat your meat before you have your pudding" situation?

Definitely take a look at Bebop. Once in a while the high praise is justified, and IMO this is one of those times. And even if you don't care for it, the soundtrack is a world unto itself.

You can watch Railgun by itself, but the first season of Index informs a lot of what's going on in the background.

I suspect my reluctance to start Bebop is precisely because it sounds like something I'd love. If I don't watch it, I still have it to look forward to...

That's the thing about something you've never seen. If you are basing your perception about how great it is on what others say, you may end up watching it and utterly hating it.

This is what happened to me with Sword Art Online and A Certain Magical Index. Other folks loved them, I listened, it didn't work out. I didn't make it farther than six episodes into either one.

But on the other hand, I started the Monogatari series on the strength of hearsay, and haven't regretted that at all. I sometimes love quirky, stylized stuff, and it's been playing my song so far.

Anyway, back on topic, I haven't seen FLCL either. Lots of people say it will blow my damn mind.

SAO and ACMI are terrible. A Certain Scientific Railgun is a bit better.

The ~gatari series is a mixed bag, but the style is arresting even when the content is concerning.

FLCL is just weird for the sake of being weird. I appreciate that someone did it, but I feel no need to finish it.

As for me, Beebop, Evangelion, On Ice, and That Volleyball One are on my radar. I feel I need to binge those.

Its funny. I actually really enjoyed acmi, but couldnt stomach Railgun.

I can't tell if I haven't seen it.

I have lists that I want to watch but haven't, but i can't really form an opinion on what I think is the best.

Also opinions vary. Slogging through Berserk, which seems to be the internet's darling of yester-year but honestly, it's what I was sort of expecting and not my cup o tea...

on the flipside, back when I was giving up anime cold turkey, I was constantly recommended Full Metal Alchemist, and that turned out to be one of the best series ever. Mind you, again, people raved about hellsing ultimate, and I preferred the first series.

I also tend to watch a mix of everything and avoid the most popular stuff (collectively people have general shit tastes), so that also makes it hard.

sorry I can't give you a better answer.

I've heard from many sources that Fullmetal Alchemist (either version) is one of the best out there. I've never seen anything about it that suggests I'd enjoy it, though.

As a comparison, I watched Cowboy Bebop twice, and somewhat enjoyed it, but it's very low on my list of anime... unlike most every other anime fan. So general popularity and personal enjoyment don't necessarily go hand in hand.

What an odd and interesting question. Taken literally, it's impossible to answer. But moving beyond that uselessly obvious observation, it's also interesting because "best" is relative. Thus, not only do I need to guess at the quality of works I've never seen, but I also have to guess at how their quality would live up to my standards of entertainment. Quite an engaging and unusual exercise.

With that in mind, my guess would be Yokohama Shopping Log.

Bearing in mind that I tend to place a high value on Iyashikei, it makes sense that I would think highly of this show as a progenitor of the genre. Furthermore, comparisons are often made between this show and Aria, which for me personally is the best anime that I actually have seen. So even though its impossible to know for sure, Yokohama Shopping Log would certainly be my best bet.

Dude your explanation was so compelling I went and googled what this anime was.
I really, really enjoyed Kabu no Isaki and I had no idea that the author had a previous work, let alone one that was made into an anime. You've just introduced me to an anime I would have never discovered normally that I probably already love.

That's awesome! Glad I introduced you to it. Honestly, I kind of made myself want to watch it as well, as the only reason I haven't is that I just keep forgetting about it and getting caught up in other shows. In a sense, this thread reminded me that I did indeed want to try it.

Pretty much my entire queue list.

Specifically, it would be

Your Name - I hear that movie is amazing but I just haven't seen it.

Death Note - I had the show spoiled so I just don't have the urge to see it.

Code Geass - Same as Death Note

Lupin the III - Because that is way too long

Death Parade - I have no idea why I haven't watched it yet

probably Clannad AS and Ano Hana. they're both supposedly "really good", and are forever on my to-watch list.

There are so, so many shows that I know people love, but I've just never gotten around to watching for one reason or another. A few:

-Monogatari series- I saw bits of it when I was younger, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. I don't know it I still feel that way now, though.
-One Piece- It's too long, I guess? I just don't have any interest in it.
-Cowboy Bepop- One day, I will get around to watching this. One day.
-SNAFU/Oregairu- same as above (also plan on buying the LNs at some point)
-Ghost in the Shell- I have no idea why, I just...kinda don't have any interest in watching this?

There's also quite a lot of anime that I don't really have the motivation to watch any time soon because I've read the manga/novels. Namely:
-Legend of the Galactic Heroes (mainly this one because it's so LONG and even the novels feel quite densely packed)
-Fullmetal Alchemist
-Bakuman
-Koe no Katachi/ A Silent Voice
-Toradora
-Fate/Zero

I'm only going to include series that I actually think I'd enjoy, not stuff that is widely popular but in genres I just don't care for (mecha, romance, slice of life, school life).

Hellsing Ultimate- I'll get around to it one of these days

One Piece- After 15 years of slogging through the manga and repeatedly taking year+ hiatuses and picking it back up again... I just don't have the energy to pick up the anime.

Berserk- it just sounds depressing and I've had too much of it spoiled

Black Lagoon- Just haven't got to it for whatever reason.

Gintama is my favorite and Berserk follows a close second but Berserk is only showing the latest episodes that began this year 2017 though really it began in 1990's. For some real old laughs, Dr. Slump is great but unavailable on crunchyroll and the dvd set costs a whopping $900!
