My first anime was Dragon Ball Z dubbed.
I was either 5 or 6 and I believe the episode was when Super Trunks (the buff Super Saiyan form) was trying to fend off Perfect Cell on the archipelago.

My first subbed anime was Sword Art Online when I was 14. I saw the first episode on Toonami and sought out the rest of the series online. I ended up finding it on Daisuki's old Youtube channel by the way.

The first anime I ever watched was dubbed, since that's all they used to play on tv when I was a kid.
A lot of people around my age would probably credit DBZ getting them into anime, but not me, I couldn't stand the show at all then, and still have a hard time watching it now (no idea why). The first show that probably really got me into wanting to watch more anime would be either Yu Yu Hakusho or Trigun. I don't really remember which one I watched first, but I know for a fact they were both dubbed.
Today I usually lean more towards subbed versions of shows if given the choice since there are a lot of horrible dubs out there.

My first was Funimation dub of Dragon Ball in the '90's. But after a while I grew out of anime. But then in my early 20's, I made some new friends at university. One of them was an anime fan and re-introduced me to it with Elfen Lied subbed.

Digimon and Monster Rancher, according to my parents (not sure which). I have no memory of Monster Rancher at all.

The first anime I watched subbed was also Digimon. Only made it halfway before forgetting about it, and then it was taken off Netflix.

Dubbed, I was 3 LOL, I switched after I was sick of having my parents overhear the profanity and sex. Ah... How many times have I chosen to only watch anime when the parents weren't around when I was a kid? I now just watch it online.

My first was Lucky Star and it was dubbed. However, about three more anime series later the one I wanted to watch was not dubbed at the time (Toradora) and then I realized how fantastic sub is.

I feel like there's going to be a lot of repeat answers for dubbed, so just to throw a curveball: Zoids

I have trouble remembering the first subbed anime I watched specifically, but the one that comes prominent to mind is: Hitman Reborn

Generally how I decide whether to watch something dubbed or subbed is the setting. In a Western-like setting I'll watch it dubbed, if it's a Asian like setting I watch subbed(exclusion being series I first started watching younger.)

Edit: Just remembered one, response changed.

Pokemon first season when it aired, later watched yugi-oh I wasn't really a anime fan until much later when I watched azumanga daioh subbed. I watch subbed mainly by habit, it drives me nuts to start with one and end with another. So if I played a game in English and watched a subbed anime of it... everything sounds strange, vise versa too.

My first anime shows were the famously bad "Battle of the Planets" and "Star Blazers" dubs.

It was dubbed. I believe it was the DiC dub of Sailor Moon.

My first anime was Star Blazers on syndicated tv in the 70's/80's, so dubbed. My current preference is for subbed, but I am enjoying Funi's dub of Yamato 2199.

Ditto and ditto.
