My sister and I grew up with an armful of VHS tapes that our mom had recorded of two shows running on CBN back in the eighties, to wit, episodes of both "Superbook" and "Flying House", both in dubbed English (as if we knew it was any different then ).

We loved them both for the quirky main characters and time-travel angle on the Bible stories we knew growing up. The only thing that struck me as odd was this weird-sounding company name in the credits: "TATSUNOKO PRODUCTIONS." Gave it a look and a wonder every time, and for decades we were both none the wiser.

Now we finally know we were anime fans before we even had a chance to know, watching the dubbed versions of "Anime Oyako Gekijo" and "Tondera Hausu no Daiboken", from a studio that was making anime some twenty years before we were born.

Good times.
It was all downhill from there, Robotech, Evangelion (which was almost the end of it for me), Gurren Lagann (Party back on, dudes), the good old Universal Century Gundams, Gunbuster via YouTube thanks to some brave souls, and finally Diebuster and JOJO NO KIMYOU NA BOUKEN here.
My taste has shifted to subs, since the original JPN seiyuu are kind of a treat with the longer running shows, but a good dub here and there like Bebop or Samurai Champloo goes a long way.

Technically, the Unico movies dubbed on Disney Channel. If you go by the first Anime I watched and NOTICED, then Sailor Moon dubbed on TV. (It's in my profile--I was expecting a different show to be on, but Sailor Moon was on instead. Best accident ever. Or...worst accident if you ask my credit card! ) Now I can only watch stuff subtitled. I can't stand most dubs these days. And it's better in my house to watch subtitled because then I can have the volume lower so I don't disturb anyone with the whole locked-subtitles that seem to be so popular these days. I don't like to wear headphones when I watch Anime.)

Technically my first anime was the Pokemon dub, but the anime that got me into anime was Fruits Basket, which I watched with the dub at the time. All the anime I could get at the time were dubbed ones from Netflix so I watched a lot of Azumanga, Doki Doki School Hours, Death Note, etc

When I started watching anime online I switched exclusively to sub though!

Let's see... first there were the dubs of Battle for The Planets, and Robotech.

Then came an odd bit of time when someone I knew via Compu$erve sent me two movies, Akira and Wings of Honneamise. Neither were dubbed or subbed, just straight out Japanese. Later on I was hooked on subs, and have been since.

I already listed my first dub., but my first sub was either Devil Hunter Yohko or an early episode of Slayers. On a side note Megumi Hayashibara was the first (and one if the few) Japanese VAs I was able to recognize across roles (Lina, Lime, Faye, Nuku-Nuku, Girl Ranma, Jessie)

as I've always been with cartoons I wasn't really aware I was watching cartoons from Japan until I did some research. my first were (dubbed): Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Vandread, Gundam Wing, Card Captor Sakura and Yu Yu Hakuso. I later switched to subbed with Sailor Moon due to the horrible dub of it. however, later did try subbed for all and started watching them first paw as subbed and later dubbed, didn't really matter to me, it simply opened up a whole new level of cartoon viewing I didn't have before.
