I don't really recall the first anime I watched since it was a long time ago now, but it was probably Pokemon. That being said though, that isn't what got me into Anime. Growing up, I associated anime such as Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon and Digimon as cartoons. It was only when I was sitting up late one night watching cable tv that I discovered Inuyasha. At some point, I started going to the library looking for what I thought were cartoons. One day I happened to stumble across Inuyasha on DVD in the anime section, and that was what got me into anime. Once I had my own internet and a site to stream anime, I initially only watched dubbed anime. It was only when I really wanted to see more than one season of an anime that I cannot for the life of me remember at this point in time that I actually started getting into subbed anime.

Dub, obviously. I grew up on dubbed shows, which I think is true of the vast majority of people here. It wasn't until I was a teenager with good internet access that I started to find subtitled shows online.

I don't know what my first one was, but Dragonball Z was probably one of the first (started when I was a little kid). A lot of the Toonami anime shows on Cartoon Network in my youth also were watched. Shows like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, S-Cry-Ed, Samurai Champloo, and quite a few others.

Eventually I stopped watching them (or they stopped showing them), and I watched subtitled shows online exclusively. I've been doing so for the better part of a decade now I believe.

Fullmetal alchemist 2003, dubbed. To this day I have still never grown to despise dubs, watching them rather often, thought I also watch a good chunk of my shows in sub, mainly the simulcast ones, the animes that doesnt have dubs or those who have really, REALLY bad dubs or translations, mainly looking at the anime with censorship in them or just plain mediocre work on the dub *stares violently at the higurashi dub*

Dubbed: the original Guyver series. (first anme) which my uncle's friend brought over when I was a kid back in the early to mid 90's I was hooked on anime since then... First subbed? oh gawd.. I honestly can't remember. It had to have been a fansub of something. back then in the 90's, everything was dubbed and sold o VHS or dubbed and subbed if it was a DVD... at least what I could get my hands on. MAYBE Love Hina, or MAYBE Wings of Honnamaise. Wings was lent to me to watch, and that was one of the few that probably had so little viewership that it didn't get dubbed... But don't quote me on it.

Love Hina was the first thing I watched fansubbed, and obviously, no dubs. It could have also been Angelic Layer, as I was gifted fansubs of that about the same time... ('00 or '01)... Though I think LH was still first.

EDIT: now it's time for the REALLY REALLY old farts to say something like astroboy or robotech (which I caught a few eps as a REALLY young kid, but it didn't stick).

I first saw anime in the 80s, and started watching Toonami in the 90s and it was all dubbed. The first vhs tapes i bought were dubs. Back then the quality of a lot of dubs was kinda bad, but subtitles didn't sell. Today I feel like studios are much better at redubbing anime.
I know people tend to avoid what they're not used to but I would say that if you haven't watched dubs then give them a try it will only sound awkward in the first episode then once it gets going you will see it's a much better way to enjoy anime visually. And also you'll be supporting American anime industry.

When I was a kid I watched the dubbed versions of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. I also remember getting a subbed Cardcaptor Sakura tape from my grandparents as well. When I first really got into anime I watched the subbed version of Fullmetal Alchemist (2003).

My first anime was dubbed and it was in the 80s. It's either Candy, Sally the Witch, Heidi, Astro boy ,Captain Harlock 78 or Grendizer. But I was so young that could barely read.... It was in the saturday morning cartoon show for kids.

The first anime I ever watched were dubs, and the first anime I watched knowing it was actually anime and not just a cartoon with a funky art style, Sailor Moon, was also dubbed. But as soon as I realized what anime actually was, I actively started to seek out subtitled stuff as opposed to dubs. So, yeah, I've never really liked dubs. They can be serviceable when there's no other choice, and I don't think they're all terrible, but I would pretty much never choose a dub over a sub.

Grew up on astro boy and speed racer dubbed if you want to count those. If not, Akira subbed is what really got me into anime with ogre slayer/demon hunter yoko and other random anime that i was obviously too young for that i could find at blockbuster.
