Synopsis

Fashionable Yuzu imagined the first day at her new school she transferred to after her mother's remarriage a bit differently; she didn't know it'd be an ultra-strict and conservative girls' school. So instead of a sweet high-school romance, she butts heads with the stern student council president Mei—who turns out to be her new stepsister. And she has to learn that hate and attraction are often not that far apart.

I don't really understand the hype around this but I also know very little about the show.

It's based on a long running and very popular manga series; probably the best known and most beloved yuri series out there (at least that's still currently being released).

I find personally that it strikes an excellent balance between being funny, sexy, heartwarming and dramatic without really going overboard in any of them like most other yuri series do where it's all either pure fluff or pure drama (or pure ecchi). It's also got a lead character in Yuzu who is just an insanely lovable character and I could see her carrying the series even for those who don't necessarily dig the rest of it.

That's just the manga though. We can only hope the anime is a good adaptation of everything that makes the manga great.

Because we haven't had a proper yuri show in a very long time and the source material (IMO) is good. We had Nesuzou Trap last year but that was crap...

Hmmm, I would change the shoujo ai to yuri instead.

Sitting here waiting for episode 1 to release, long time manga fan, I hope the adaptation goes over well and they don't censor the relationship between Yuzu and Mei~!

And the first episode is now out. It airs at 8am Pacific every Saturday: http://www.crunchyroll.com/citrus/episode-1-love-affair-758985

Episode 1

Yuzu's first day as a transfer student, and she's already in the doghouse of the disciplinary committee for numerous uniform violations. But thanks to the student council president Mei being romantically attracted to her that she's off the hook just this once. It turns out that this school is extremely sheltered from outside influence. And Yuzu has her sights set on one of the teachers only to find him in love with him. Little did Yuzu know that Mei is her new stepsister, and now things have gotten out of hand now that her yuri partner is living under one roof. That sure was intense there at the end, all while Yuzu is such an oddball.

Eh....the artwork was nice and the character chemistry is definitely there.

Got what I had expected overall. Damn, that kiss was quite intense at the end. Beyond that, I don't have much expectations for the story. I've read parts of the manga and storytelling isn't impressive. Going to be my guilty pleasure of the season.

Episode 1

Yuzu attends a new school after her mother remarries and has trouble on the first day due to breaking a lot of rules. The student council president shows up and fills her up and takes her phone away. Later in class she tries to make friends and gets pulled away by a student who also transferred in school and is a fellow gal. After getting her phone back she witness her teacher making out with the student council president and runs away. Later that night after helping her mother move boxes they buy ingredients for dinner and her new sister shows up and turns out to be the student council president. After dinner Yuzu tries to talk to her little sister but she ignores her and when she brought up the kiss Mei forces a kiss on her.

The first episode started off to a great start. The animation is great and it shows it by how Yuzu gets ready to the well detail of her lips and eyes. Being the new student is tough especially if its an all girls school and they are all sheltered princess. Meeting a fellow gal will help Yuzu in school. Seeing Yuzu's reaction that the principal of the school is her new grandfather is funny. That kiss at the end was hot as hell.. Can't wait to see more.

Episode 1

There we go. I do miss some of the art style from the manga and the animation isn't always quite as smooth as I hoped it would be but I knew that coming in based on the trailers. Beyond that, though, this was a really solid start that hits upon pretty much everything that is so good about the series. Taketatsu's voice work as Yuzu impressed just as expected and she brings an already great character to even more greatness here. It took me forever just to get through the episode because I had to keep pausing and I think this may actually be one of the very few anime that I actually watch more than once.

Not sure how this will play for those who aren't already fans of the series but I know I enjoyed it a lot. Not perfect, but really damn good so far.

Too many awesome Yuzu faces to post them all.

I'm so relieved that the anime wasn't complete garbage, it was actually a great adaptation imo The art was never gonna be as good as the manga but it was much better than I was expecting; I was actually quite happy with some of the changes they made as well. Normally for me changing characters' hair colour from the source material just seems dumb but in this for once we actually have a Japanese school where all the characters (apart from Yuzu ofc) have black hair! When I saw the trailers it bothered me that they changed Harumin's hair from brown but it actually makes much more sense how they've done it in this...

Voice acting worked pretty well, the only character I wasn't really sure about was Ume (I think that was her name, I don't think she's ever actually called anything other than 'Mom' 'Mother' 'Mama' or 'Ms. Aihara' in the manga), but she wasn't bad, I just wasn't sure the VA really fit the role.

I really liked the way they portrayed the school though, it came across much more like an elite girls' school than it does in the manga imo. The additional scenes they added in general were good though tbh, they all fit and fleshed out the episode well. It was obvious they'd want to end the first episode where the first chapter ended, and I'm glad they pulled it off with new scenes rather than just continuing into the second chapter and killing the moment...

Overall I'm really happy with it so far, sure it won't be the best anime ever but it looks like it's gonna be a damn sight better than I was expecting (also I was waiting for that Mineko's room scene, Passione didn't let me down lol)

Also,

I'm surprised you think that, I think the storytelling and general narrative of the manga feels significantly more authentic and enthralling than any other yuri / shoujo-ai I've encountered before. I guess if you compare it to regular romance manga or the better end of BL it might seem a bit shallow but I didn't really think it was notably unimpressive. Well, to each their own I suppose.

---

EDIT: this might be a little spoilery but I forgot to include it in my comment, the final scene actually made a lot more sense compared to the manga version imo, like it really seemed to come across that Mei was trying to demonstrate what it feels like to have someone force themselves on you; in the manga the first kiss always seemed a little odd to me because the manga just makes it look like a quick kiss, compared to the evidently lengthy scene between Mei and Amamiya

Also to note it is nice to see the ED filled with Saburouta's actual artwork.

AOTY saving 2018!

Pretty hawt in places, and I did notice they expanded the intimate scenes a lot more compared to the manga's few panels at most. Nice.
Not sure if I want to read ahead or wait for the anime, hmm.

Was the teacher supposed to be in the female bathrooms when he met Yuzu?
