Synopsis

The battle for succession that continued for three generations of shogun in the Keichou era culminated in a gruesome battle of ninja arts between the Kouga and Iga clans. Amidst a rain of flower petals, a man and woman who had decided to live for love were separated once again, beautiful in their transience.
However, it is said that by the hand of Hattori Hanzo's adopted son, Kyouhachirou, these two flower petals, whether temporarily or permanently, were given life again and left two mementos behind. These children, born with a destiny of their own, were called Kouga Hachirou and Iga Hibiki. The former had eyes like his father's, and the latter had eyes like her mother's.

It is now the Kan'ei era, and the land is at peace. As ninjas begin to disappear into the shadows after being deemed unnecessary, The Kouga and Iga clans ask a favor of Hachirou and Hibiki in hopes of reinforcing their foundations.

Episode 1

This series has a much different feel to it compared to the original seeing that ninjas are about to be phased out as opposed to a Romeo and Juliet-style story about love between warring families. Of course, had you watched that, you would have known why nobody from there is going to appear this season. As a quick refresher of the first season that you absolutely need to watch first:

Anyway, there's lots of action, and very little is given away at this point other than the fact that the last remaining members of the two clans have a destiny. It gets straight down to the fighting without really establishing itself going to show that while Hachirou has a deadly technique in his eyes, he's too simple-minded that it's going to get him killed as he is right now. And then Suruga goes off with his army to battle in the rain while trying to secure a boat to cross the river. Suruga has a tough time against that guy who can avoid blades naturally, but against Kazuma he's no match Given the way the original series went that I'm surprised to see a sequel, but nevertheless it's here more than a decade later, and so far the storytelling has been pretty lethargic as I don't have a clue what's supposed to be going on.

Thanks for this. I remember watching the first season but it was so many years ago.

Oh this is a sequel, thought the name sounded familiar. Yeah couldn't follow what was going on except everyone wants the two kids to hook up even though they're brother and sister? Hopefully a Han Solo ninja steps in to stop that.

seems like an extension of the original in more ways than one, including art style. just don't like one thing, other than that I'm alright with it. let's hope they don't go into that direction or it's officially dropped on my end. but I rather like the opening reaction of the ninja fighting kids, the adults and the art style itself, it's like old school Basilisk.

I gave this a shot even though I didn't finish the original. The other was a twisted nineties anime. I found this one boring. didn't finish the first episode. Which is unusual for me.

Didn't watch the original but this first episode was fairly promising. Interesting characters and premise, some cool action and a very old school classic vibe. Not Earth shaking but still pretty cool. I'll definitely be back for more.

Decent enough action. Could really do without the adult sponsored incest breeding program, but I guess what's one more way to add conflict into a show about warring ninja clans?

Episode 2

And now, bits and pieces from the first season are revealed, so if you haven't watched the first season, then stop.

Pretty much, this is a summary of what happened in the first season and how this ended up being a Romeo and Juliet type of story. First, it was Dango and Ogen who love each other, but killed each other because of the war, then Gennosuke and Oboro as they killed themselves in the end. Now they don't want it to happen a third time with Hachirou and Hibiki meeting the same potential fate in the end. Seeing that it has been quite awhile since the original series game out that a crash course that reminds us the important things that went down is helpful.

Oh, I should probably paid more attention but this is a sequel? It looks like the first season is also available on Crunchyroll, so I'll have to check it out.

There's a lot of political intrigue in this show, which is interesting. That said, I'll put this one on hold until I finish the first season.

I know this is a sequel to a series I havne't seen the first season of, but I feel like I missed some pretty big detail as to just how the couple who killed themselves wound up having kids without anyone previously noticing the woman was pregnant.

Episode 3

So a new enemy has emerged in the Joujinshuu, and they are out to kill both the Kouga and Iga families. Tsuibamu takes out the Treasures as while they are formidable fighters, it's another thing entirely when their techniques are being used against them. That's what his power is as he can reverse the flow of time, turning the attacks back and killing the user instead. That's what happens when one dies when he gets tied up in his own strings, another ends up swallowing the flames he was breathing out, and the last one poisons himself instead of the enemy. Other than that, not much stood out aside from the reminder that Hachirou's eyes can turn hostilities against them, and Hibiki's eyes can cancel out any form of hostility as inherited by their ancestors. Well, I'm pretty underwhelmed by the story as I have no clue what to make of things, so I think I'll pull the plug on this.

Just a refresher for those who have not seen the original series. Don't remember the details but a rough summary is below.

The two clans, Iga and Kouga, were enemies for centuries. The Shogun at that time has two sons and expected there to be wars when he dies as the two kids will fight to be the next Shogun. In order to prevent a war, the Shogun mandate that the future Shogun will be decided by a battle between the two ninja clans. 10 Ninjas from each clans was selected. and the last one standing wins.

So far, the new series is underwhelming compared to the original, hopefully the later episode will be pick up.. The new version tries to be Naruto with the chibi ninjas, whereas the original anime is a slower paced and more atmospheric.
