As told by a current moderator apparently the required word limit for reviews has been lowered but I would like to make a recommendation to change the required word length. I can only guess why the limit is what it is perhaps there has been too much spam?. For many of the shows I have watched on here they have been very good and I don't feel a review needs to be padded out, the creators (companies/directors/cast) put so much work into these sorts of things e.g. the characters, the story line, the art and sounds(just to name a few).

I don't go to school anymore ( I graduated even though this is being posted publicly I don't mind mentioning it) so I don't really want to have to write a 500 word essay just after a long day of work (pulling down houses and knocking up concrete) just to show my appreciation for a review of a japanese tv show.

I would much rather write a post about this issue (in my opinion) like this then just milk the crap out of something for a long review.

I would say a 40 character limit would be more appropriate and for the people that put in a bunch of empty space (e.g.
< empty space) that they don't need to be reminded of such a thing (as long as it isn't spam crunchyroll has MANY moderators practically online 24/7).

Thank you for your time Crunchyroll and I hope this is reviewed in the near future.

a 40 character limits is extremely low. you're supposed to write a review, not a twitter post (which by the way has a 280 character limit)
500 word limit isn't that much, but i guess lowering it to around 350-400 would be ok-ish.

edit: checked some reviews, and some of them only have 61 words / 330 characters, which means the minimum word count is already low.

As far as I know, the minimum to publish a review on the site and 250 characters, half of 500, plus 20 characters at least for the title. As it is marked in the photo.

Basically, yes, spam is a problem, but also that it's important that for a review, it's someone's impression. There is the comments section for thumbs up / thumbs down or quick thoughts, while reviews are generally more detailed "why I liked / didn't like / would suggest / recommend avoiding". There are ways of cheating the system (as you point out), and cheating the system is generally a bad idea.

If you meant 40 words, not 40 characters, that's still pretty short. My response to you is far longer already, after all.
