The reason I ask this is because, in a typical mecha series starting with the original Mobile Suit Gundam from 1979, the main-protagonist's mecha is usually the only one of its kind that could take on waves of mass-produced mecha on its own. That means that, with rare exceptions like 08th MS Team and Majestic Prince, the main-protagonist mecha primarily fly solo.

So does anyone know any mecha anime where mecha are seen in small teams of around 4, 6, or more mecha each? Note, that we're not counting combining mecha like Getter Robo, Combattler V, and GoLion/Voltron, because that would be too easy.

Thanks.

Zoids, obviously combiner series too like Voltron/Dairuger. And while shows like Getter Robo and Mazinger are about the main robots, they have friends they fight and team up with on the regular.

There's a few, but the best example would probably be Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspectors.

-Gundam Buildfighter
-Gundam Buildfighter Try (sequel based a few years later)

-Zoids: Choatic Century
-Zoids: New Century (based in the distant future of chaotic century. Zoids are now used for a Mecha Combat Sport)

-Gad Guard(RetroFuturistic JazzPunk, the mecha aren't piloted but ridden by their keepers and not team based but everyone gets a bit of screen time)

-IGPX or Immortal Grand Prix (Teams of 3 pilot mecha that skate and fight along futuristic Mega Highways)

Macross, Macross Zero, Macross Frontier, Macross Delta
Southern Cross
Mospeada
Armored Fighter Ztoms
Fang of the Sun Dougram

(3 of the above were crammed together to make Robotech)

Aldnoah Zero

Though, the reality is that in most shows have the protagonist in a mecha that is at least painted differently so you can tell who is who in the fight.

Edit: I almost forgot Knights of Sidonia.

Other examples I'd like to bring up:

1. The Operation Meteor Gundams from Gundam Wing. Their pilots don't really have good teamwork skills, though.

2. Athrun Zala's team from Gundam Seed, with each member piloting the Aegis, Duel, Buster, and Blitz.

3. The Celestial Being Gundams from Gundam 00, each specializing in melee, sniping, aerial assault, and heavy artillery.

There were also the main armors from Gun X Sword, including Dann of Thursday, Brownie, El Dorado V, and Vulcan, as they all worked together to take on The Claw and the other six Original Seven armors.
