Saw it on TV. CR has the episode up now but might be 404.

Episode 1:

This was an interesting episode. From that catchy OP song to the character cast and colorful world setting, it seems like a show that I think has a lot of potential.

The way they introduced the characters so far is interesting, almost all of them stand out in some way or another especially Dakki with her dark intentions. I'm even interested in knowing more about Taikoubou with his character role.

Overall, interesting stuff. I like the Chinese style of the setting honestly.

That fucking face

Apparently people are able to watch it on the mobile app. Not sure why it’s still not working.

Pretty good first eps. Skipped over a few battles as Taikbou get to the palace...
Dakki is really really evil. and show that everyone is pretty genre savvy..

Some fun cameo for those who know the manga.

Episode 1

I never watched Soul Hunter, so everything is new to me here. The MC sure learned quickly how tough it is to make it alone seeing that he nearly bit the dust against Dakki. Supu ended up falling victim to her charm, but he ended up getting saved by Taikobo's would-be rival, while another person who was strong enough to resist that woman's charm saved him from that pit of hungry reptiles. Pretty interesting start here as it sets the stage for Taikobo to develop his character through his quest.

They were certainly loyal to the old design of the characters and everything else. I have yet to decide if that was a good thing or not. What I do know is every time I see Supu I keep thinking "a flying Mumi Troll". Very distracting....

First of all, I thought the first episode was fantastic, but I'm a huge fan of the series so I'm probably biased.

WOW, though, they flew through a lot of the story in this first episode, but even though they did, it didn't feel convoluted. But again, huge fan, so it may be helpful that I'm very familiar with the story. For reference, the first episode of the original anime was about the first 5 minutes of the first episode of this one (Taikoubou accepts the project, Shinkouhyou, plus a couple things that were added in).

Hmm, I think they cut out the stuff with Ou Kijin though which I thought was pretty important, but maybe not. Surely, Ou Kijin and Ko Kibi will show up later considering they are pretty important characters.

I'm happily surprised the subtitles were so good. Names were not butchered and terms were left in. I only noticed Hakutsuru calling Taikoubou "suusu" which wasn't kept in, but suusu is a pretty weird honorific (if I remember correctly it means something like your master's master's disciple. Hakutsuru, Youzen, Kou Tenka, all call Taikoubou "suusu" since he is Genshitenson's disciple).

The voice acting was really good. As expected, Ono Kenshou and Toriumi Kousuke are absolutely perfect as Taikoubou and Shinkouhyou. Suupuu's voice was also great. I was a bit sad to hear Kou Hiko's voice since his original voice actor passed away recently. I'm not a huge fan of Dakki's voice, but Kakazu Yumi in the original was so spot on and perfect. She had that perfect cute tone to her voice but could also be incredibly evil.

I'm actually feeling pretty good right now that the rest of this first cour will probably not be as rushed as the first episode if they plan to end it at Bunchuu. I have a couple of feelings of how this is going to go: either they rush the entire series and cut out some huge battles which would suck or they end this season around Choukoumei and then do another 2-cour season to finish the rest.

I think we'll know once we see key visuals for the second half and if they show certain characters
that show up at the end or not.

I still can’t quite believe there is a new anime for this manga! That being said, it’s been a long time since I last read the manga, which might’ve actually worked in this new adaptation’s favor. Not recalling all the details of the manga, I didn’t feel like it was too rushed, and it hit all of the major plot points that I do remember, like the snake pit and the fight with Shinkohyo. I can see the story and the character design not appealing to everyone (heck, I still can’t get over the clown shoes design, even after more than a decade) but I think this anime will most likely appeal to existing fans who come for the nostalgia. New viewers who can look past the funky design and some times over the top story elements can still find the story enjoyable, especially as we get into the character development portions of the story later on.

As for how far along the plot this anime will go, judging by the opening battle between Taikobo and Bunchu and the list of characters that;s been revealed for far, I’m guessing we’re gonna end at the conclusion of the Sennin War, which is a feat in and of itself for a 23 episodes anime. I’m hoping if this anime does well we might get a second season for the latter half of the manga.

A bit surprised to find myself digging the character design and art. Taikobo's design looks funny; even more so when those black, over-sized shoulder pads reminded me of a shoulder transmog I have in WoW. It felt so old school and decidedly not of this era. I looked up the manga and it was in Shonen Jump publication from 1996 to 2000. Makes a lot more sense now. The ancient China setting is also neat.

As someone who's not familiar with the source material, this episode did feel rushed to me. It seemed like there was enough content for 2-3 episodes, but they blitzed it with just one.

Episode 2

And here comes Nataku, an artificial human that has become another obstacle in Taikobo's journey. But it's an opportunity to gain an ally. Nataku detests Li Sei so much, and he's out to kill her, and Taikobo stands in his way. He died once before, and was given an extravagant tomb, but Li Sei then smashed it and Nataku is alive again. He's out to take revenge on Li Sei, but with mother protecting him that he backs off. That just goes to show that no matter how much of an asshole his father is, he's still his father and nothing good comes out of killing him.
