I also live in England, but my family doesn't recycle as much as you (noodles1631) do. We just about fill one green box every month... I think my family and I should do more to help the Earth by recycling, but sometimes we just can't be bothered... -shot-

Oh yesh indeed! Tromsø is quite .. on the front-line when it comes to recycling :o

The garbage bags we got:
A green one for bio trash (food etc)
A red for papers
A blue one for plastic
A yellow one for cardboards (milk containers, cardboard containers for food etc)

And a regular bag (the kind you get from a store) for .. *off-topic* garbage :P

All this is sent to a recycling building where it's utilized

Most recycling is actually bad. It actually costs more to recycle paper than it does to throw it away. Also the chemicals and stuff used to clean the paper and de-ink it produce more pollution. And you aren't saving any trees since there are trees planted for the purpose of creating paper. But aluminum cans are good to recycle. Can't recycle enough of those.

We recycle a tonne of things here. Enough so that we only go through one trash bag or so a month. Not like it takes any real effort to use several kinds of bin when you recycle after all ^^ Plus it really cuts down on how much you spend on rubbish bags ^^

the cleanest country in the world is New Zealand

Seriously? As an ex-Kiwi, this one is kinda funny as hell. The 'clean green; image they have there is 90% myth. Even internal reports say we're clean on the global scale, not so much on the internal one >.> Since recycling isn't mandatory, and rubbish bags are paid for by rates and thus, free in most cities, why take the extra time to drag out a whole recycling bin?

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice country (assuming you don't mind talking to some of the most racist people on the planet), but the cities and towns, meh, not so clean. If you want clean in NZ you need to wander down somewhere people don't live, and if you do that, you can't really get a feel for the real situation >.>

The government does wonders with a little number fudging and some double-talk ^^

My dad is a recycle-nut, he lives and breaths to recycle, we don't usually focus on paper but recycling plastic/glass bottles is very easy and saves space if you have a lot of garbage like my family does.
I myself think recycling makes a big difference but I haven't checked any stats, I see it as what harm could recycling possibly do to the world, it's simply goodness. As for our duty, I think it's natural to at least try to restore a world you've had to take some part in destroying [recycling is a mandatory duty/chore in my household].

I thought the cleanest country was Singapore. They don't even let you chew gum because they think you may litter. I don't know if this is still true.

I was in Huntington Beach, California last year and they didn't have a recycling program. I thought all the environmental fanatics lived in California.

Recycling gives you that good feeling that you're helping out.

Yeah, I recycle. But I'm not one of those crazed fanatics who yell at people for not recycling.

exactly. some people here sound like they're new to the idea or something.

we have a blue bin for pop cans and plastic bottles (sometimes they're placed in separate bins too), a grey bin for newspapers and cardboard, a green bin for organics, and another one for garbage that does not fit to these categories. everyone in my neighbourhood puts out the bins every week for them to be collected.

I think that recycling is a good idea, but there are no recycling posibilities in my town and I ain't going to another town just to get my trash recycled.
