Firstly, let me say I don't have a very fast internet connection (it's a financial thing). For this reason, I choose to watch Crunchyroll with adverts, as I could not stream HD video smoothly.

I got home from work last night looking forward to watching some anime. I turned the oven on to heat a pizza and fired up the PS4 which I use to watch Crunchyroll. I put the pizza in the oven near the end of the opening credits of Psycho-Pass episode 3 and settled down to watch the first half. Then it happened.

An advert for Dragonball Fighter Z came on - in full HD.

Well, the pizza was ready before the end of the advert. Fifteen minutes to stream a full HD advert which probably lasted all of 30 seconds.

The second advert started and, yes - you guessed it - the same advert again. Totally deflated, I quit Crunchyroll and played a game for a while.

My questions are:

1. When will this advert stop airing? I will not watch Crunchyroll while there is a chance of it reappearing on my screen.
2. If I take a Premium subscription, can I change the streaming quality so than it is not HD? Anime streams perfectly well currently, while the ads can buffer a lot.

I've moved this over the Sony Gaming Platforms help area, since that's the app you're using.

I do know that you can change the streaming quality for watching on the website even if you have premium, but I get the impression that that doesn't apply to console and device apps. Perhaps someone who also watches on PS4 can confirm what the available options are.

I just fired up CR on my PS4 to give this a test, my results are inconclusive.

Things I tried:
Switching the default quality setting on the site from 1080p to SD and 480p, restarting the app and eventually the console inbetween.
Logging out of my account in the app and watching episodes with ads when prompted. This I figure should've forced a lower quality.

Videos I tried: The first few minutes of the first episodes of Hitori no Shita (S1), Black Clover and Hero (Drama)

Other things of note: My TV is only HD ready but supports 1080p

My results:
The ads I got when watching without logging in definitely were low quality. For the videos themselves, however, I couldn't see a difference in quality no matter what I set on the website or if I logged into my account or not.

Possible conclusions:
The PS4 app automatically streams at whatever quality it thinks your connection can handle, regardless of whether you're logged in or not (and thus by extension your premium status).
My PS4 only streams at SD quality (it doesn't look like it and at 40 Mbps it should do better anyway)
I simply can't spot the difference between SD and 1080p on my TV (with how grainy the ads looked I figure I should've noticed a difference on the actual video quality though, especially with the drama)

If anyone has a scene that makes for an especially good comparison they want to let me know about I'm willing to give this another try.

Seems like for a few years people have been roughly asking the same thing... So from what I gathered it seems like it'll automatically adjust itself based on your internet connection.. also paying for premium will remove ads all together.

google ftw.
