What was more popular One Piece or Game of Thrones? Which had a bigger world wide fan base, was it one of the world's most popular and longest running anime or HBO's massive hit show?

Game of Thrones is a household word and pop culture reference around the world...One Piece not so much

^ what he said

There are a lot of One Piece fans, but I'll go out on a limb and say Game of Thrones, because it has a larger fan base with fans of those books and the show who aren't into anime or OP, while many otaku like GOT.

You've got to be living in a bubble for this to be a question.

It's actually a pretty good question.

The reason is, nearly the entire country of Japan are fans of One Piece and have been fans of it for the last 21 years.

On the other hand, a good chunk of several countries love Game of Thrones, but would one say that GoT is a household name in America/Europe like One Piece is in Japan?

It's kind of akin to the question, what's more popular: Football in America or Baseball in Japan?

There are also 2 ways to answer it, by pure numbers, or by percentage of demographic.

By pure numbers I'd say GoT just because we are talking about a few different countries all with large populations vs one country. However if we are talking about percentage of demographic, then I think a larger percent of Japan likes One Piece, than the percent of people who like GoT in either America or Europe alone, or even combining America and Europe together as the target demographic.

It's more like asking what's more popular Star Wars or Your Name....

not to mention he specifically asked "which has a bigger worldwide fanbase"

Idk maybe I just don't understand how popular GoT is, but One Piece is the third best selling comic in history next to Batman and Superman I believe. I think it's a lot closer than you guys are making it out to be.

if you take into account that there are 87 volumes...430 million sold/87 volumes = 4.9 million sales per volume

60 Million sales for Song of Ice and Fire books for 5 books = 12 million per book

i am a little confused about your last paragraph. Are you saying that there are more One Piece fans in Japan then there are Game of Thrones fans in America and Europe?

I think that a larger percent of Japanese people are fans of One Piece than American/European people are fans of Game of Thrones.

That is to say, if you could say that 30% of Americans were fans of GoT, then I'd say at least 50% of Japanese people are fans of One Piece. Those are just arbitrary numbers however.

If we are talking world wide, then GoT hands down. One Piece really is only that popular in Japan after all and it's stupid to make any other comparison. Sure it has some fans among the otakus of the world, but it's a very small percentage. I'd say Naruto has more worldwide popularity than One Piece.
