I love the background art in this, really nice to look at while everything is going on and I'm not normally a fan of pastel generally.

An Osaka punk Hamster???

Harry Harryham

And love that 'tude

Not sure I'm digging the "hurray! hurray!" cheerleader shtick though .

Episode 1

And so we kick off another season of PreCure. As predicted by others this season seems to focus heavily on the concept of dreams and future occupations.

This episode was a fairly standard introduction to our main character Hana Nono (Cure Yell). In terms of plot, it more or less corresponds to the basic synopsis of the show, leaving the next few episodes to focus on rounding out our initial group of cures.

Something in particular I noticed was just how many aspects of this episode reminded me of set-ups from previous seasons. The focus on dreams and and inclusion of an antagonistic corporation is highly reminiscent of Yes! PreCure 5, as is the OP which is sung by the same person who performed the EDs for Yes! PreCure 5 and GoGo. The baby fairy along with charismatic animal character with an accent brings back memories of Fresh! Precure. As does the concept of a three girl group for the initial cast. In many ways, it feels like they are intnetionally setting out to make this an "anniversary season" to celebrate the 15 year milestone.

As for how I feel about it, well, I'm not too sure. I'm personally still coming off of a high from KiraKira a la Mode, which has ended up being one of my favorite seasons, so its difficult and unfair to compare them this early. That being said, baby fairies have always been ever-so-slightly grating to me, and Hug-tan seems to exacerbate the issues I have with them. But to contrast that, I have a stronger affinity for these characters than I usually do. Homare and Harry in particular stand out as being really cool characters right off the bat. It helps that Harry reminds me of the awesomeness that was Tarte.

So, overall, a standard introductory episode. Even so, I greatly enjoyed it and am eager to see how this season plays out.

Yea, already lovin' Harry. The Osaka dialect is the same as Kero from CCS, too, IIRC. Interesting little touch.

As for the cheerleader shtick, I kind of agree that it it's a little... over the top. I kind of like it though. Gives her a nice energy. I would have preferred an actual catchphrase though.

Also, forgot to mention, but I really love Yell's design. In her transformed state she exhibits a sense of coolness that I feel is really striking. Not that you would know, but it kind of reminds me of Cure Dream how I didn't think much of her air-headed normal persona, but when she transformed she exhibited a heroism that was massively inspiring. I expect Cure Yell will be kind of similar.

A gold chain to match the sort of "pseudo-rap" ED?

Episode 2

In this episode, we are introduced to our Precure of wisdom, Cure Ange. Saaya Yakushiji is the kindhearted class rep with a penchant for expanding her knowledge and helping others. Turns out that she had also experienced a similar event to Hana where time stopped upon hearing Hugtan's cries from the sky. After encouragement from Hana that she could be and do anything, she transforms into Cure Ange to protect Hugtan and her new friend Hana from another rampaging Oshimaida.

Saaya is quite a sweet girl - a real angel. Truth be told, I find her a little... too perfect. I kind of wish she wold have more of a major fault or quirk, but perhaps something like that will emerge later. Her transformed design matches her angelic persona perfectly - with calming blue colors and pure white feathers arranged in a flowing design. It kind of reminds me of a stereotypical white mage or healing class from an RPG.

Her quote from Mother Theresa about working together made me wonder if perhaps these cures are going to be highly complementary. Yell is definitely an up close and personal melee fighter. Ange looks like she could be more of a protective or support role (perhaps like Cure Mint from Yes Precure 5). Then maybe the final initial cure will be something akin to a DPS. From the opening it seems like her "star attack" could dish out a lot of damage.

In the middle of this episode we also got a glimpse into where Hugtan came from. Talk from this and the last episode causes me to suspect that there might be some serious temporal shenanigans that happen this season.

Overall, another decent episode I suppose.

Episode 3

This episode begins with Hugtan upset at the recent change in her environment, and so Hana, Harry, and Saaya embark on a journey guided by the Mirai Pad to find a way to assuage her foul mood. While following the Mirai Pad, they run into Homare at the petting zoo, who stands up for them against a crotchety salaryman annoyed by Hugtan's cries. Afterword they run into Hana's mom, and with some quick thinking, convince her that Hugtan is Harry's child and Hana and Saaya are helping to look after her. Hana's mom is able to appease Hugtan thanks to her established motherly instincts, but unfortunately the group is soon beset by yet another Oshimaida from the Criasu Corporation. During the fight, Yell gains resolve from her desire to grow into a cool and reliable young lady who is capable of looking after Hugtan, and that resolve ultimately allows her to defeat the Oshimaida. Homare also witnesses Yell fight the Oshimaida, which leaves a strong impression on her due to her desire to "fly again".

Something of a development episode we have here, which is not too uncommon. There were lots of other interesting little notes regarding the Mirai Pad and the Mirai Crystals, but the thing that stuck out to me the most was when Lulu mentioned Yell and Ange being "two Precure other than the ones we're searching for" - implying that there are other Precure in this universe. Perhaps even other Precure who are still active (though I personally doubt that myself). It seems more likely to me that these other Precure are caught up in the "temporal shenanigans" I'm already expecting. Or at least one of them probably is if this is going to play out how I anticipate it will.

A big part of this episode was devoted to the whole parenting "theme" (if you want to call it that). Lots of focus on looking after Hugtan, feeding her, making sure she's happy, calming her down with a heartbeat, etc.

Let me delve into my own brash personal opinion for a bit, so feel free to tune out here.

This child-rearing thing is fine, but I've never really liked this idea of suddenly throwing a child into the care of these middle-schoolers and almost romanticizing it as cute, responsible, or "womanly" while simultaneously hand-waving aspects of the process as magic or hiding them behind Harry's unseen efforts.

Furthermore, this entire season so far seems to lack a unique spark that can really draw me in. Again - this is all just personal opinion, as the sorts of things that will draw me in will repel others away and vice versa. I'm aware that to the core, Precure is a childrens' series, but this season in particular doesn't feel as though it really offers much beyond that so far, and what it does offer are things that I'm not too keen on to begin with.

Again, I need to stress that this is all opinion, and a niche opinion at that. My stances have always been somewhat off-kilter - loving HappinessCharge and Kirakira, being unimpressed with HeartCatch and Smile, having Splash Star as a favorite, and even defending Mahoutsukai and Go! Princess. My opinions are as odd as they get, so take it all with a massive lump of salt. Furthermore, we're still pretty early on, so by the end, I may grow to love this. I'll just have to wait and see. Perhaps I'm just a crotchety salaryman myself

In episode 2 I found Harry just randomly transforming into some bishounen a little too... random, but after episode 3 at least it makes some sort of sense from a protective guardian point of view. Nice to get a little info on their background, even if it's still unclear as to why Hug-tan is so special (what is it exactly he/she is going to do with all these mirai crystals?).

Also in episode 3 I learned how to calm down a baby with my heartbeat! Handy parenting tips!

The ED is beginning to grow on me, even if I've never been a fan of this style of CG dancing.

Yes, Hugtan and her relationship to the Mirai Crystals are both quite mysterious at this point. It'll be interesting to see just what the connection is, and how it relates to Hana's dreams.

The ending has grown on me as well. It's surprisingly catchy!

Initially I felt the same way about the CG dancing too, but recently I've come to appreciate it. I mean, true it's a little jarring compared to the rest of the show, but it allows for such fluid and realistic animation which I think is vital for dances like these that are choreographed to be easily imitated by viewers.

Not that I've tried it or anything...

(No, seriously though, I wouldn't go that far)

it's fun to see the influence / inspiration from previous seasons. the biggest inspiration coming from Yes! Precure 5 and Dokidoki.
(there's also inspiration from Heartcatch, Go! Princess and some could say Kira kira)
having watched episode 3, the series seems to suggest that cure Yell will be like cure Heart from doki doki (not a good sign)

Yes, the inspiration from past seasons is a nice touch. Almost feels like an amalgamation to me at times though, making it lose a bit of its identity.

I guess I just forgot about Doki Doki, but very strong tinges of that as well as you mentioned. I compared Ange to Mint, but perhaps Rosetta may have been a better comparison. Well, I guess all three are equally kind of... unobtrusive?

I'm curious what you mean when you say Yell will be like Heart. Is that in reference to her being the primary "purifier" and group focal? I suppose if that's the case it could get a tad old.

yes, pretty much. cure Ange is just a shield at this point, and cure Yell is doing the actual healing.
cure Ange's line prior to transforming wasn't all that memorable. "can i become a precure and help her? yes we can! (insert obama campaign sticker here)". compare that with Yes! Precure 5 episode 5, in which cure Aqua faced the same question, but the scene was far more memorable.
. maybe it's just my memory, but i don't remember the baby from doki doki too well. just a character that lets cure Ace transform (a laser coming out of her belly...really? and why is she smiling, having a laser come out of your stomach doesn't seem fun ). i'm probably being biased, but Chiffon from Fresh! was far more memorable and fun to watch!
just please, don't have lasers or what-not shoot from the baby just so a precure can transform.

I quite liked the Oshimaida this week .

Some nice style/animation in the fight scenes too.

Homare has some issues, but of course it's only a matter of time before she joins the team. Well we already knew she would; the real question is who is the fourth Precure? Hana's sister? The girl from Criasu Corporation?
