I wrote up a post and accidentally lost it all so it's taking every ounce of strength I have to stop me from turning into an Oshimaida myself right now.

'Sigh' ~ guess I'll just make a quick statement instead to replace it. Darn it all, I had quite a bit to say as well.

Well, here's the quick version.

Episode 4

Hana tries to befriend Homare and convince her to become a cure. It is revealed that Homare was an ice skating prodigy who injured herself during a jump, which traumatized her and fills her with anxiety whenever she tries to jump. During an Oshimaida fight, her strong desire to "fly again" causes Hugtan to generate a mirai crystal, but as she jumps for it, her anxiety gets the better of her again, she falls, and the crystal disappears. Hana and the others conclude that she needs more time to heal her heart.

Very visceral combat this episode, along with moments of strong emotional impact and unexpected events. In many ways, this episode invokes what has made this franchise so great over the years, even if the others haven't really done it justice. Interested to see if it keeps it up.

yes, pretty much. cure Ange is just a shield at this point, and cure Yell is doing the actual healing.
cure Ange's line prior to transforming wasn't all that memorable. "can i become a precure and help her? yes we can! (insert obama campaign sticker here)". compare that with Yes! Precure 5 episode 5, in which cure Aqua faced the same question, but the scene was far more memorable.
. maybe it's just my memory, but i don't remember the baby from doki doki too well. just a character that lets cure Ace transform (a laser coming out of her belly...really? and why is she smiling, having a laser come out of your stomach doesn't seem fun ). i'm probably being biased, but Chiffon from Fresh! was far more memorable and fun to watch!
just please, don't have lasers or what-not shoot from the baby just so a precure can transform.

Cure Ange just doesn't seem that memorable at all to me personally. But at least they're doing a lot with Homare.

As for Ai and her "Kupirapa" baby laser transformation - yea, that was just...

Honestly, everything about Ai and Cure Ace just didn't work for me. Felt a bit odd to have Rie Kugimiya voice such a cure.

At least for the moment Hugtan's magic isn't so obnoxious. The time aspect is interesting. They could do some cool stuff with it if they don't mess it up, but so far I think they've done well with it.

Homare has some issues, but of course it's only a matter of time before she joins the team. Well we already knew she would; the real question is who is the fourth Precure? Hana's sister? The girl from Criasu Corporation?

We still don't even know how many cures there will be. Three? Four? Five? Six? More? There could be justification for each. I have my own theories, but it will be interesting to see what happens. We just don't know. Personally I doubt it, but it might even be some completely new random character we've not seen yet. They've done that before in the mess that was Doki Doki. But again, I doubt it.

There may very well only be three. There is only a blue, yellow and pink/purple crystal/gem on these:

Having said that, if Mirai Crystals represent Precures there may be up to eight. Then again I might have been half asleep when (I believe) Harry once said there were eight Mirai Crystals.

I don't expect they would all represent Precures, but... you never know

Maybe it's four current Precures and four former ones. I believe they said that there is potential for former Precures to exist in this world. By former I mean, someone like Hana's mom or some such.

Or maybe it's four current Precure and four "enemy" Precure. That would be interesting.

Hmm. I hear "Gloomy Tomorrow Company", and I think they are fighting against Wal-Mart, Microsoft, or some such.

I thought they were fighting against my current employer!

*Badum Tishh*

I jest, but I do find it slightly ironic that the antagonist is represented by a corporate monster, when I know for a fact that some of the dream jobs they list in the ED require you to work for such a corporation

But I get what they're going for nonetheless.

Since we're on the topic of speculation about the number of cures, I'll give my prediction. This is all just speculation.

My money is on 5 cures this season. As for how I think it will play out...
(Spoilers from previous seasons below!)

That's my thought process. Could be completely wrong though. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Well, Pedantic gave me the push to try out this anime. Toei making sakuga scenes? Must figure out what kind of sorcery they're pulling.

This was an interesting watch, so thanks for linking to it. He sums up what was stellar about episode 4 quite while and provides some novel insight that I hadn't considered.

As for the sakuga scenes, I'd say that they're sprinkled here and there all throughout the franchise. I hear a lot of people get into it through beautifully animated gifs or clips of fight scenes. I've said to others that there isn't a single season of PreCure without some awesomely stunning fights - but some are immensely better at it than others. A similar thing can be said for the emotional impact. As I mentioned in my post earlier, the combination of those two things in episode 4 really showcases a sort of microcosm of what makes the franchise so great.

Although.... I'm not really sure if you can characterize the whole show like that. The sakuga for me has always been a delicious topping rather than the main dish, so take that as you will. But I think he sort of touched on that as well a bit.

Episode 5

In this episode, we are at long last introduced to our Precure of Strength - Cure Etoile! The episode begins with Hana and Saaya employing Homare's help to perfect the grand opening of Beauty Harry - which is Harry's new fashion shop. They continue showing kindness in an attempt to get closer to Homare, and she begins to open up to them. However, Homare is soon captured by Charaleet who uses her recent failings to taunt her and send her into despair in order to conjure an Oshimaida. Even though Homare is still impacted by her trauma, she remembers the kindness of Hana and Saaya, as well as her own resolve to fly again. These strong feelings begin to swell within her, and she becomes determined to "take back her heart", allowing her to transform. In a stunningly brilliant climax, Yell and Ange launch their new ally Etoile far into sky to deliver a powerful blow to the Oshimaida, alowing Yell to purify it. The episode ends with the three of them expressing the new depths of their friendship through some cute name-related banter.

Such a great episode! That climax where we finally see Homare sort of "fly again" was just superb. A great continuation from episode 4 and a lovely introduction to our final initial cure. Now that the group's all together, the search for the remaining mirai crystals can begin in earnest. Hopefully we'll learn a bit more about Hugtan's mysterious past as well.

It also looks like we're probably going to be done with Charaleet for a while. Looks like Criasu will be sending someone a bit more... competent to handle their Precure problem. That backstab by Lulu though... At least for the moment, seems like they're making her a corporate dog through and through.

These last two episodes have been a nice pickup. I'm eager to see how the chemistry of our trio will work now that they're all together.

Episode 6

Our trio (plus Hugtan and Harry) make their way to the local home center on a date to commemorate them becoming Precures. Turns out the manager is none other than Hana's father. The three of them decide to help out a florist in the home center who is short staffed, and get a bit of work experience in the process. Meanwhile at Criasu, Charaleet is in the doghouse for failing to deal with the Precure, and so the section chief, Papple, decides to take matters into her own hands. She summons an Oshimaida to collect negative energy, but it was overcome by the teamwork of our trio. At the end of the day, they reflect on their hard yet rewording work as florists, and run into Hana's mom, who offers to make them the subject of a column in a local magazine which will chronicle the experience (as well as other jobs they shadow going forward).

This episode was solidly okay, but I have to say that personally, it all felt a tad contrived to me. I feel like the segment with Hugtan getting lost was pretty much just to kill time, and the entire episode felt like it was just a set-up to justify the concept of these girls trying out different jobs.

After the pickup of the last two episodes, we return to one that I don't really care for myself.

Now, you might be asking "Cait_Sidhe, what's your problem? What's your beef with this season?"

To which I'd respond, it's honestly just a matter of taste. I've always enjoyed Precure not really for the fights, but more for the character interactions - parts you might even call "slice-of-life". For example, the bit in this episode where the girls were exploring the home center. Now, maybe it's just me, but those aspects seem far weaker this season than they have in the past. I'm often willing to overlook it when the action is spectacular (as it was in the last two episodes), or the plot and character development make up for it (as they have in the last two episodes), but in a year long series, you can only include so much of that. Inevitably you need to also work in episodes like these that just focus on the day to day lives of the characters, and your enjoyment will depend on how well that works for you - and it just doesn't really do it for me.

I've been perusing comments from other sites as well, and I'm quite happy that Hugtto seems to be enjoying a boom in popularity. I think that's great! Although for me personally, this series so far has been wildly hit or miss. Like going from a strike to a home run and back again (or should I say "Homare-run"). But again, that's just me.

Oh! And we also got our traditional OP (and in this case ED) preview of the upcoming crossover film - PreCure Super Stars! In keeping with the recent trend, looks like it will include cures from the current and past two seasons - Hugtto, KiraKira a la Mode, and Mahoutsukai. Have to say, I got a little choked up seeing the KiraKira cures again since I really loved those characters. Though, it seems that I'm an oddball for holding that position as well.

So I am enjoying this episode this time around.. And RIP to Charleet for a good sum while. (What is up with the handsome boys in this season!! *.*;; )

I feel bad for Harry, but I guess being a responsible hamster boy ain't easy. Hug-tan never disappoints me. This baby has something I can't help but chuckle!

Papple (Purple??) is something though.. But I'll miss my bro who tries to hard but fails. At least she accepts defeat... Fairly.

Off-topic, but I'm surprised there's a PreCure thread here on CR. (Considering that we have no way to watch it legally in ENG subs.)

EDIT: Caught up to some of the episodes and...

"Ohoho? Who does that?" - Homare

Overall, good stuff! I still don't know why PreCure in general outside of Saban's short lived rights is not broadcasted, in its original form and at streaming sites like CR...

I'm glad I picked this up again. I dropped it around half way through episode 3 but The Pedantic Romantic talked about episode 4 and I picked it right back up again. I knew they would never let me down because this show is much greater than I was thinking after the first couple of episodes. Makes me want to give the original Futari wa PreCure another chance too.

Also, hey Homare! You've got to appreciate the ojou-sama ohoho. It is the laugh of champions!

Apparently Toshiyuki Someya was in the most recent episode of this? He tweeted about it, then the Teruma official account tweeted that he's Cure Unicorn. Which is super cute.

I really feel like Harry is an unsung hero of the show. Always working hard behind the scenes to take care of Hugtan. Charaleet was also a pretty cool character. I can't say for certain, but I get the feeling we'll see more of him later.

As for the thread, I know there was someone else who made a Precure thread in the past, but they nuked, so I figured I would pick up the mantle at least in the interim.

It truly does baffle me that Precure is in the licensing situation it is, especially considering the popularity of Glitter Force and the unlocalized subs of some of Toei's other works. I really don't know why Precure specifically gets the shaft. It's quite unfortunate and mysterious.

I'd certainly recommend the original if you find yourself with some time. Initially I found it dated and hard to get through, but after getting deeper into it the show starts to shine and remains one of my favorite seasons. Plus it's on CR as well.

And I've got to agree with you on the ohoho. Ranze came out of nowhere and already burst into best girl territory for me personally. The rare "hard working ojou-sama" are always highly regarded in my book.

Had to look it up, but yes! He voices Henri Wakamiya, a very suave (and somewhat androgynous) half-Japanese half-French ice skating prodigy. A little arrogant though. Not my cup of tea, but an interesting and unusual character for the show. Quite like what they're doing with his androgynous aspects though.

If the crystals are tied to the numbers I would guess 4 Precure with double transformations

although I am always up for evil Cures (Cure Dark still my fav)
