I want to start a company, but I am not sure what I should be doing, selling software? Socks? Anyway, do you have a company? And what do you do? Sell?

Well all companies ideally sell either a product or a service that other people can't provide on their own. If you want to start a software company be prepared to spend several years just in the development stage and hope you can get something patented that hasn't been created a thousand and one times over.

Me? I make a side living finding rare and unusual things for people, but it is by no means a company.

You might be approaching this from the wrong angle, normally you work out what you want to do first then decide if you need a company to aide in that.

If we're talking random here, combine your ideas - develop a software that 3d prints socks for people when they put in their measurements.

Lol hmm, truth is we are working for this shoe making company. My pay is slightly above average and we work on software known as product management system(PDM). Even then our PDM branch is on the verge of disappearing within the company. Now the core development of this software is built based on this guy in China. So I thought, well, if this branch is going to disappear anyway, why not have ourselves create a new company that sells just this PDM software, pretty much a web application built out of asp.net. I'll be pulling people from within the company to form this company while keeping their jobs, the other company would be operating in secret. Is this legal? And should I try it?

It doesn't sound too legal, you'd need someone of a trained legal background to examine contracts and the software rights here to avoid getting into a whack of trouble.

Sounds good, who is this person I should be looking for? A lawyer?

Fred, you're in Taiwan, right? I daresay most, if not all, of the people reading your threads here on Crunchyroll are not, so if you are serious about these ideas you need to get a reality check and advice from experienced people there, or see what's available on parts of the internet that are focused on doing business in Taiwan or from Taiwan. Crunchyroll is not that place.

Companies are not as easy as people think they are to build and grow. They take a fair amount of upfront capital unless you're just acting like a freelancer, and a a crapton of time marketing and developing what you are selling. Then it takes a crapton of time and resources to build up your own infrastructure and equipment and to manage your customer base... Then, the best thing you can do is get your investment dollars out (to the best of your ability) and sell said business...

EDIT: also, software is a brutal industry. Highly technical and highly competitive. By the time you develop a product, it's out of date within a few years, and chances are there's clones of what you did (if you're successful).

It's just the fact that it costs only 100 dollars to start up a company. I thought everyone should get this opportunity. Of course that also goes with the low salary rate in Taiwan.

No and I don't want one. There wouldn't be any room for laziness if I ran my own company.

I like the socks idea.
