Eva was originally an anime... I haven't read it, but I would doubt the manga would have much to add....

Plus Eva they just release all the damned time as if to make it make more sense... And it never does quite the job so...

You should watch the anime first, however, the manga is better than the anime.

I think the manga is very worth reading and it is different from the anime with certain characters being slightly different- often because they were given more time in the manga vs. the anime. Like one character is actually only in the anime for 15 minutes despite how much you see him in promotional material but he plays a much different and bigger role in the manga, he is in 3 volumes instead of 1 episode. Some other characters are given backstories. And some characters like the protagonist, Shinji, had some events changed to make him, in my belief, more likable.

I think the anime offers one thing to audiences and the manga adds another. I actually really like that they aren't exactly the same and the manga does try to take in the criticism the original series had.

There is this one part that was episode 20 of the anime, but is only in volume 6 of the manga. And there are 14 volumes. Even the government organization is more fleshed out in the manga. Overall definitely got a much bigger and easier to understand picture with the manga.

Oh and I think the Omnibus was very high quality. One of the better ones out there. And it has color pages and interviews in it.

PS. I understood the original anime just fine, going to just note that. But still feel the manga was better paced and presented. And I like the ending for the manga best. Seriously cried my eyes out. (with joy)

Yeah, the manga is definitely a more complete narrative than the anime. Many of the character arcs are more eloquently and clearly handled in the manga because it had more freedom to work with the story. Both are worth viewing for sure, though!

Sidenote: Be careful when buying. Several Evangelion doujins have actually gotten official western releases and look *very* official. Viz Media made a very good release of the original story across five books containing 14(+1) volumes, I'd suggest looking for that one.
