The Screaming Phoenix Killer is a virtuous evildoer. The One-Eyed Impaler is really the terrible one.

The Enigmatic Gale, though:

So because I was too tired last night I watched the movie this afternoon, and I am now even more excited for the second season.

I still like Enigmatic Gale, but it's because he's psychologically fascinating . . . though I acknowledge I'd possibly be an easy mark for someone that charismatic, as lonely as I tend to be.

The tragedy of what happened with Screaming Phoenix Killer here is that he could have reined in his wounded pride, despite being unfairly condemned for things he didn't do, and decided upon a path for himself following the tournament. Instead he became consumed with hatred and revenge, and threw away what dignity and hope he had.

It's not his fault he got caught in that situation, but he could have avoided taking so much of the bait. I think that's one reason why Gale is so successful---he preys on people whose egos are over-inflated, or people who have a chip on their shoulder.

Shang, of course, was pure charity, showing empathy to a poor poseur forced into a less-than-desirable living situation by forces beyond his control.

I'm looking forward to seeing how he and Gale interact with the new characters. It should be fun!

Definitely feel more invested in Screaming Phoenix Killer after seeing his past. Also damn, Enigmatic Gale is such a charismatic harbinger of mischief. The movie did feel a little weird in that it featured two different stories: Screaming Phoenix Killer's past and Shang Bu Huan's impersonator (it was particularly hilarious how he cut out Juan Can Yun in his stories). In retrospect, I would have preferred to watch the two parts in different sessions but still enjoyed them immensely. Looking forward to future seasons!

This franchise has an amazing production value (then Hiroyuki Sawano's soundtrack is a cherry on top). I would be excited to see other stories be presented in this fashion.
