hearing a root verb in different form and adjectives here and there..understanding japanese sentences, japanese vocabulary
but i have taken Japanese lessons and had Japanese sempai in the dojo ... I can understand about 70 percent of what the content of the sentence are from listening and watching anime

im learning a decent amount of it from the subs. i hear some words alot and just kinda put then together with subs for their meaning. mostly alot of verb forms, emotions and greetings, the nouns are harder for me to pick up. its gotten to the point where ill be in the other room and i can usually tell the general theme of the scene (love confession, school anxiety, ect) and a few of the details (two characters speaking about a third one, one character reflecting on his/her relationship or lack thereof)

I haven't learned a LOT but I've picked up on a few words that no matter what anime you watch they are constantly repeated... like "hello","thankyou", "what(nani?!)", etc.

I don't really learn Japanese from watching anime. I learn Japanese by studying the grammar and working with kanji flash cards I made using a kanji dictionary. I watch anime because I find it enjoyable, not because I think I'll magically get better at Japanese just because there are English subtitles. Trust me, the subtitles aren't always right, and in many cases they're flat out wrong. That may be one of the only language useful things for me when it comes to anime; checking what I hear and know against the subtitles.
