Yes, my vocabulary has increased through watching anime.

However, a lot of my core understanding of the language comes from books.

i learned japanese through anime and can now watch animes without subs (although have to focus a bit, especially in the long sentences that involve alot of words)

It's the same how i learned english, was watching alot of american movies when i was little so i have never studied any english in school when we had it but always aced the exams etc.

Also trying to learn chinese this way (mandarin), starting to get a feel for the flow of the words and seperation of em and some few phrases, but still far away from carrying or understanding conversation

Currently studying using CR for immersion. Loaded up my iPod with plenty of j-* and keep on the Kanji studies, sentence packs and SRSing into oblivion.

No haha anime uses sentence/verb constructs that we never use in everyday life. Also all shounen anime men use the Kansai dialect not the tokyo dialect which is the Japanese anime fans are aiming to learn. And to add to the fact that the subtiles are never 100% accurate and never expresses the subtle changes that the Japanese language has.
