I never expected to, but I am slowly starting to understand how words are strung together in Japanese. I just don't know if I'm learning some weird dialect or Yankee slang.

Oh and I'm sure some people will mock the possibility of learning a language from TV, but I know a hell of a lot of people who went from the stage of 'someone who took some classes' to 'someone who can hold a conversation' primarily by really watching -- and enjoying -- television. In fact I dated a Pamiri girl for a little while who learned about 60% of her actual, practical English from Star Trek:Voyager, Stargate, and Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

And yeah, she does say, "Jupiter's Cock" every once in a while...

sure, of course you do.

it's the same way we learned our first language too -- by listening to it and observing the relation to actions.

i won't pretend you'll go from novice to native just from watching anime... but it -can- be good supplementary practice, in addition to some kind of more formal training.
turn off the subs, and watch your anime. you'll have to listen a lot more carefully.. but it will definitely improve your hearing recognition.

same thing would be true of any other language as well, if you watched shows in that language.

Simple things like "Oyasumi", "Arigato" etc. And sometimes I start thinking about animes and mangas names like "Boku wa tomodachi ga sukunai" = "I don't have friends" or something. Then I learn something about phrases, and things like what "to", "wa", "no" etc. means.
I know some words but I can hardly form phrases. I couldn't survive in Japan without Engrish

But I've learned lots and lots of English, reading manga or watching anime with subs almost every day! School English is easy almost all the time and I've got very good grades now

But I easier learn by reading than listening, so it would be nice if somewhere were anime with romaji Japanese subs

i did learn many words, yes.

But i also learn Japanese outside of Anime. Whenever i get back from a lesson to watch some anime i suddenly notice many words and phrases that i've just learned. It's fun. In this regard anime actually helps me learning.

One day i might be able to turn off the subtitles ... one day...

Just words and random phrases. Anime is not a good tool for learning Japanese anyway.
