What is Anime? What qualifies as Anime? Is it an art style, a way of story-telling or is it where it was produce? What is the difference between anime and cartoon? I always believed that shows like teen titans, young justice and the avatar were cartoons but people have said that those shows are influenced by anime, does that make them anime?

To watch anime or not to watch anime. That is the question.

"Anime
Anime is a style of hand-drawn and computer animation originating in, and commonly associated with, Japan. The word anime is the Japanese term for animation, which means all forms of animated media. Outside Japan, anime refers specifically to animation from Japan or as a Japanese-disseminated animation style often characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastical themes. The culturally abstract approach to the word's meaning may open up the possibility of anime produced in countries other than Japan. For simplicity, many Westerners strictly view anime as a Japanese animation product. Some scholars suggest defining anime as specifically or quintessentially Japanese may be related to a new form of orientalism." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime

": a style of animation originating in Japan that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action-filled plots often with fantastic or futuristic themes " https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/anime

It would seem the common theme is it originates in Japan. Not sure about the other two you mentioned but Avatar was primarily created in the US so I don't think it qualifies as Anime. Influence doesn't really mean much IMO. If I make a Chinese restaurant that's influenced by China does that mean its Authentic? By no means unless I myself am from China, bring actual Chinese cuisine. But even then the restaurant would not be in China. I know that's a poor analogy but its the best I could come up with after a 12hr day at work lol.

I like to think of anime as a medium of communication, not just "Japanese cartoons". I mean fundamentally they are just Japanese cartoons but to me it's more than that. You wouldn't say "I don't like TV", because there's more to TV than just TV. Ultimately, there are genres, such as reality TV, drama, comedy etc. Anime is sort of similar in the sense that it can be divided into various sub-genres. That's why I think it's sort of stupid when people say "I don't like anime" because ultimately there is so much and it can be so different, for example I personally watch a lot of drama meanwhile my friends watch lots of shonen which I despise.
Ultimately, anime is an art style, but like any art style, can be divided into various types.

Anyways that's just my opinion if anyone thinks they can put it any better I'd love to see what you all think

P.S. here's my first ever forum post, saw this is on the Crunchy homepage and decided to check it out

It's a mode of story telling. Mode is more broad than genre.

when I was younger I thought that anime was only Japanese animation, but now that china is producing animation that has a nearly identical artstyle I just think of it as higher quality animation with better storytelling, and if there is no story, it has better humor to make up for it.

Anime is commonly referred to as animated material from Japan.

To Me? It's just anything animated lmao.

It's a medium of entertainment. Very broad word. Lots of genres. Lots for everyone to enjoy.

Anime is love, anime is life.
