Okay. So I have re-watched the current episodes (6 episodes) on the 'Violet Evergarden' show on Netflix, 4 times now. And I have noticed some things that got me to this theory I am about to tell you.
(Note*** I have not read the novel. Because I did not know it existed until two days ago. And I am most definitely gonna read it over and over when the show is over - so no spoilers and just laugh at my theory if I am completely off )

(SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVEN'T SEEN ALL THE RELEASED EPISODES OR ARE PLANNING TO START WATCHING THE SHOW)

So let's start with Major Gilbert and the whole 'him being alive or not'. I personally think he is alive. Because no one has come out and said it directly that he is dead. Claudia, Violets boss, said in the ending of episode 2 that even though he is from a rich and prominent family (who clearly has a reputation - or so it seems) he was still a man of spirit. That's when his coworker Cattleya questions his word ''was''. Claudia responds by saying that Major Gilbert is not coming back.
For me, I think Claudia is referring to the man Major Gilbert was before the war. So Major Gilbert is not dead but just not himself. Maybe he got som post traumatic stress disorder after the war and simply started becoming more like his rich prominent family and cut all ties with the people from the war. Hence the 'not coming back' part.

Now moving on to Violet Evergarden. In every episode it starts and ends with a new character telling us what their first thought of Violet was. And if you noticed they also talk in past tense:''she was always..'' which could mean two things. Either, she will also change her personality - which is the whole point of the plot. Her becoming more in touch with her 'human side' - or she is dead.

So far I think this: Gilbert is hiding and living his 'new life' as a new man after the war. Violet finds out somehow and then something crazy happens and Violet feel she has to sacrifice herself because she somehow owes Gilbert. In the latest episode (episode 6) the guy from the Astronomical Observatory, Leon, talks about how you sacrifice you life when you love someone, in order to make them happy or alive. And back to episode two, Claudia tells Violet how her body is on fire and she will soon realise all the burns she has. Does he talk about her past as in: her actions during and before the war? If so. What did she do?

Urgh. I still have so many questions and I absolutely hate waiting. But this show is amazing. What do you guys think of this theory? What are your theories and which episode is your favourite so far?

This really should be posted in the already existing discussion thread. you'd probably get better reactions and feedback there.

Thanks Yamstarch!

]maddiepuuh, I've closed this thread since there was already a discussion thread for this show. Please post your theory there if you haven't already.
