Robotech was my Gateway drug into Anime. I give it a pass for what it was. And hey if you're feeling nostalgic, It's on Netflix.

In Robotech, Max and Milia have 1 daughter.

In Macross, they have like 8, some how all girls. It seems like Max has no Y chromosomes in his nuts.

Robotech set the stage for a lot of things, mecha, science fiction and so forth, it's ancient and it wasn't all that great when it first debuted let alone anything of greatness now. subbed/dubbed they both came out rather bland, but, it is something which is holding still, not to mention it's hand drawn, not bad for it's era. let's face it, there will be errors regarding hand drawn stuff, not to mention, hand drawn cells aren't done anymore. most times it's cgi. so if that's what you're into doing then that's cool, but, the cartoon in question is still a legend after all.

Given that they are two completely different and unrelated shows that's not exactly a huge surprise. >.>

The novels did a much better job of working all 3 shows into a coherent timeline and finishing the story after they gave up on the US produced continuation. But I think Harmony Gold's "roboverse" ( ugh ) screwed up the novel's continuity now too. Because Harmony Gold is awful and has been mishandling Robotech for decades.

The hand drawings were not made for robotech, they were made for Super Dimension Fortress Macross (and Mospeada and some other show). you should credit the show that the animation really belongs to, not some frankencartoon. the only good parts of the story and ideas behind robotech came from Macross, not robotech, so no it did not set the stage for mecha or sci fi, Macross did.
Also the movie " Macross: do you remember love?" has much better animation that has aged much better

Okay, Macross is awesomesauce. It is flawed awesomesauce, but it is still awesomesauce. They had a limited budget for the original TV broadcast, plus a schedule to meet, and they ended up cutting back on the number of episodes (originally going to be 52, cut back to 36, IIRC), AFTER the show started broadcasting.

DYRL, is awesome awesomesauce. But it had a movie budget, a compact, prewritten script and after the success of Macross, the budget to really do a lot of great special effects shots and animation that is still great after all these years.

And then there's Robotech. Carl Macek fell in love with Macross, but to get the show syndicated, he needed more episodes, so he added on 2 unrelated series. The only reason those series are there, and the storyline with it, is so Macross could be broadcast. Take it for what it's worth.

And, as always, F*** You, Harmony Gold, for letting greed deny us every other Macross series!!!!

I somehow doubt that any novel, even if well written, could turn the space wizards known as the robotech masters into something thats actually not terrible.

the novels were fun. so were the comics. One of my favourites was "The Zentraedi Uprising" which happened between Macross and Masters. It explained why Miryia got her hair cut.

if carl macek loved Macross, then why did he change the characters names ( I could have forgiven him for changing Hikaru's name to rick Yamada like he originaly intended to, rather then rick hunter because it would have both kept his ethnic heritage and given american kids a easier name to pronounce back before people got used to Japanese names) and come up with the idea of "Robotech III: The Odyssey" where rick hunter and the some of the other cast of robotech go back in time and built the SDF-1 with minmei giving birth to zor? If that ever was animated, it would be just atrocious

Southern Cross is the worst of the four series regardless. The novels did a better job with it but there's only so much you can do with middle aged space wizards. Fortunately, they do get blown up if I remember right so hey there's that.

It's a cartoon from the 80s. Kids needed to be able to pronounce the names and *everything* was Americanized. Hell, they even changed Claudia's last name so it wasn't so, you know, French. Besides, it was probably easier to make him American than to explain to 6 year olds how he was a white, blue eyed Japanese man.

Both Robotech and Macross bore me to death, but I can't be bothered to write anything on trashcans. Even though I'm only offering half-assed attempts, am I "edgy" enough for this thread?

But unlike me you failed to explain why it should be written on a trashcan
also that is off topic, this place is for discussing robotech not other random anime that are actually good
