In terms of writing an essay or document or google search without having to look at the keyboard while typing. I guess as a bonus question

If you answered yes, when did you realize that you could.

Google searching, yes. Mostly because Google is going to correct any typos.
A complete essay or document? Not so much. This is much easier for me to do without looking at the screen and then going back and doing any neccessary formatting afterwards.

Playing MMOs I can usually do one of two things, play the game or type in chat but with text communication sometimes necessary when you can't look away from the screen I eventually noticed that I can type out mostly legible short sentences without looking at the keyboard. Emphasis on short and mostly legible.

Idk it's kind of satisfying to click computer buttons when you're a bored sixth grader so I guess just muscle memory. This one kid could type 64 wpm w/o looking and he could play flight of the bumblebee at like 12 so... I guess random skill?

I got to nearly touch-typing but with just a few fingers from MMOs, then fully trained up to regulation touch-typing in school. Just gotta find the little bump keys on F and J and I'm good.

EDIT: When... from the MMOs probably like 8-10, school maybe by 11 or 12? I don't know. Tons of modern life needs typing.

Edit 2: Protip: When you're starting out, make sure you have a keyboard with full-size keys (unlike most laptops which are scrunched together for space) and of an appropriate size that your fingers can reach all the letters from resting position. You'll definitely want an ergonomic "split" keyboard for long periods of writing but I'm not sure how it is to try and learn on those, the spacing takes getting used to.

Also look into "mechanical" keyboards, they give more response to your presses and the individual keys are usually nicely squared and distinct.

No. I have to look at the key board the whole time as I'm typing.

I touch type. I would not have been able to finish college without that skill.

Which a lot of people can do.

What seems to bother people is not that I touch type and do not look at the keyboard or screen when typing, but that while taking diction from someone I can carry on an entirely different conversation with a third person. And what seems to really freak people out is when, while carrying on that conversation, I will be able to tell without looking at the keyboard or screen that I made a mistake while typing the diction and fix it on the fly and carry on with the typing all while never pausing or dropping the other conversation.

It is also an interesting party trick.

It probably helps that I was touch typing by about the 3rd grade. The last time I took a speed test I was around 124 words per minute. Which is an order of magnitude slower than my reading speed.

I learned this some time ago, my word count is over 300 these days, the mistakes I make are because the keyboard can't keep up.
