What is a anime you thought you would hate, hated the sound of it or the idea and then watched it and was pleasantly surprised. For me it's

Kodomo no Jikan - This eventually got very sad and emotional during the end of the first season making me really appreciate it, but I have not seen the second season.

Seikon No Qwaser - I just like this, dunno why I guess because it's fun but I havn't seen the second season of it yet either.

Kodomo no Jikan was actually one of the first anime that I finished when I first started watching anime legitimately and I had the same response.

Another anime I enjoyed despite not really expecting to was Listen to Me Girls, I am Your Father which was the first anime I ever completely finished and it was a lot of fun and surprisingly emotional at times. Sora is still one of my favorite anime girls (mostly because of nostalgia though).

Food Wars. I was so on the anti-hype train.

Now it's one of my favorites.

Also the Kodomo no Jikan manga is superior in every way to the anime, but that's the case most of the time with these things.

Yuri on Ice. I had zero interest in watching it, but after seeing how popular it got I decided to give it a 1 episode trial. Ended up loving it. Now I watch male figure skating in a different light.

My Hero Academia.
I'm not fond of school settings, Japanese take on superheroes, or protagonists that randomly don't have the setting's power. I was slightly misinformed and thought Deku was the only one without powers, so that solved that. Once I finally watched the show, it was actually interesting. I love large, developed casts and MHA delivers. I also like a bit of melancholy in a story, which is there in Allmight's plot line.

Polar Bear Cafe; http://www.crunchyroll.com/polar-bear-cafe
Comedy. I thought the concept was too silly and it "must" be a children's show. In fact, children will probably understand extremely little of the comedy. A little slow to start but excellent cast.

gdgd Fairies; http://www.crunchyroll.com/gdgd-fairies
Comedy. I started this several years ago, but took it seriously and found it boring. After much more exposure to anime and learning about the ad-lib talk genre, I get the parody humor and ridiculous situations.

You and Me; http://www.crunchyroll.com/you-and-me
Comedy. Was turned off from the start by the poster and description, and thought it was some kind of heartfelt BL drama. It is not at all BL drama, and is instead a relaxed but very entertaining comedy. In looking for the link for this post, I just found there's actually a "You and Me 2" catalogued separately for some reason, so I'm excited to go watch that now.

EDIT: I'll add Daily Lives of High School Boys; http://www.crunchyroll.com/daily-lives-of-high-school-boys
Was also turned off by the poster and description. But it is genius comedy on par with Gintama.

When I first really got into anime I thought I would hate Toradora. I thought to myself "pff this looks gay" after a friend recommended it to me.

Now it's my favorite anime of all time.

Devil man crybaby: thought it was going to just focus on sex and violence but I was pleasantly surprised on how on how much I enjoyed the story and characters

Haikyuu, Planetes, Food Wars

The biggest one was FLCL though. I figured it was another one of those ones that critics just love because it's weird and says some random shit that doesn't really make sense but they love it because oooh psychological. And it doesn't really make sense (though it does), but it's in a completely different way than I was expecting, and it was a super fun watch. Never have I laughed so much over 6 episodes, and the animation and soundtrack were spectacular. Now it's one of my favorites.

I can't think of any; however, I didn't necessarily expect much from Polar Bear Cafe or Baby Steps, clicked on them both rather randomly while browsing. Polar Bear Cafe is hilarious and Baby Steps, a tennis anime, while perhaps lacking a great title, is actually a pretty enjoyable show thus far.

I haven't finished either yet, I never blaze through anime but definitely enjoying them.
