Descending stories, showa era rakugo, the way anime news network we’re talking about it as the single greatest thing ever made in anime and the same with other critics, I thought from what they said this was the defining anime of all time. However I was fathered bored and found it completely overrated

There are so many anime I look forward to and that people hype up that I just don't see the appeal of. To name a few that have popped into my head:

-Your Lie in April: This stretched out some parts for far too long, was way too melodramatic and didn't really make me care about any of the characters. We didn't really get to see much of the main couple interacting imo, and while it was sad, it wasn't enough to make me cry.
-Hoozuki no Reitestsu is just not that funny. There isn't much to a show like this if it can't make you at least chuckle internally. I found it quite boring, honestly, which is a shame because it has an interesting premise.
-Tokyo Ghoul- the anime completely butchered the quality of the manga's storyline (everyone just feels rushed in the 1st season and the 2nd season...we don't talk about that here) but even then, I've never found this series to be anything special (I like if, it's just not that good). None of the characters nor the storyline stuck with me, and I couldn't really see why people were fussing over it.
-Kyoukai no Kanata- this was just a mess lol

I don't usually get involved in the hype trains these days, I either like a show when I'm watching it or I don't.
The one in recent memory that was pretty much unavoidable to hear about ("the new king of shonen", was it?) was Black Clover which turned out pretty meh for the manga and completely unenjoyable for the anime.
An older example of a really popular franchise that just doesn't work for me is Dragon Ball.

Hunter x Hunter- I heard so much about how awesome this Anime is and it is ok i guess, but nothing Special for me. Poor world Building is probably the biggest issue for me. Some characters, Events and Locations are just to random. Plus they realy try not to finish a single storyline they started aren't they. Take the Yorknew City Arc, it ends so sudden and without any consequence.

The Ancient Magus' Bride. Its worldbuilding is nice and pretty, and sometimes it's poignant, but everything about it is too disjointed and incoherent, and its characters aren't very compelling. I feel like people think it's great just because other people tell them it's great, and they don't have a good sense of what being great actually means. (Not to mention that everyone runs around now saying taste is subjective and everyone has sh*t taste. This is wrong and stupid.) Few people seem to be assessing it critically or objectively. I suppose that's true of all art, though: If you only know how to appreciate things in ways other people taught you, and you can't appreciate it viscerally, you're going to miss other standards of judgment.

Very few ever matched their hype. Hyperbole is never honest anyways.

Attack on Titan. you'd think based on the scores it has here and on MAL it was the greatest anime made to date. Beloved characters can and do die. The same could be said for any worthwhile anime. It's so gripping when Kamile Erin's mother dies, you ever see how Kamile Bidan's mother dies? Then I had to wait a Boondocks amount of time to get a second season that I should've known better than to watch until the third season came out. The series has it's moments but Levi and Mikasa are the only things that make this series watchable.

There's a lot of anime that I dislike, from the animation itself to the characters and the plotlines. From Attack on Titan to My Hero Academia, there's a lot of anime that's bad, really bad and "why am I watching this?"

Now, admittedly there *is* some anime that meets or exceeds their hype ("A Place Further Than The Universe" clearly fits this). But finding them amidst the "Black Clover", "King's Game" or "Boruto" can take a long time and the need for patience. Currently, out of 46 series on CR, I'm regularly watching 10 of them, of which out of those 3 are in my personal favorites list. And we're not even going to discuss older series, I'm sticking with what's streaming now.

Mind you, that's how I view it here. Your mileage may vary, et cetera ad nauseam.

I was relatively new into my simulcasting career so I wasn’t aware of the hype till after the fact but Overlord never really fit with me. I can’t think of too many more off the top of my head. I’m a pretty easy guy to please.

Slight stretch but I guess attack on Titan kinda counts for me. I like it enough to watch it as the episodes come out but I don’t see it as this world breaking show. The same thing does apply to MHA tho I enjoy it considerably more than AoT. I think it’s more so my genre sweetspot has been slowly moving away from shonen shows. Like I can’t pick any overarching gripes I have with those shows and enjoy them enough, they just won’t be near the top of my favorites lists.

All that being said one thing I have a problem with are the anti-hype train people. Like the ones who can’t stand popular shows and write them off before they even start and come in with a toxic mindset about it. Hype by no means = bad. That mindset = bad.

Don't get me wrong, I liked it. It was pretty entertaining but I don't think it was one of the best anime ever.
What bothered me the most was the science-y part of the story. Of course I don't expect a sci-fi anime to be extremely realistic (it's science fiction), especially not when it's a story about tame travel, but it also shouldn't be distractingly unrealistic.
I personally liked the characters but I have to say I understand everyone who doesn't. They're all based on well-known (and maybe overused) stereotypes and I understand why this might be a problem for some people.
