Because if a film doesn't see a wide screening in US theaters, it's unlikely to get squat for Oscar nominations.

I'm not sure that's necessarily true. More exposure can help in some cases but there have been cases where producers have opened a movie in as few theaters as possible to still meet the Oscar requirements. In fact, all a movie has to do is play at a movie theater somewhere in LA for a week to qualify. If they have the name recognition of a big director/actor/etc. (and a big enough monetary push) that can be enough to get it nominated.

In a 2014 survey conducted by the LA Times, it was revealed that of the 6,028 Academy Award voters asked, 94 percent were white, 76 percent were men, and the average age of voters was 63 years old.

Probably because they're voted on by old white men who only begrudgingly even allowed an animated film category to be added in 2001 to begin with and gave the first one to farking Shrek.

I want an anime to be created and directed by Guillermo del Toro.

White people

also money

Who watches the Oscars? maybe women just watch it for best dress.

is it deserving? What is deserving?

Christoph Waltz was deserving, and that was 5 years ago.

It also depends on the campaigning and getting the money to put Anime X out in theaters too. Funi probably could've did this with Your Name since I saw a few articles about it in mainstream publications other than anime-based, but like I said, they ain't Disney.

And also, there's still this bias of 'ANIME IS TOO WEIRD FOR KIDS/LOLIPORN!/OH THATS POKEMON/YUGIOH RIGHT' in the US for the most part.

Maybe since he got an Oscar, we can finally get that Monster adaptation he's been working on.

(I think he's the one? If I'm wrong, someone correct me?)

I honestly couldn't care about the Academy Awards. I feel like it's become way too political and absolutely unwatchable.

Boiiii not even. I watch it for the opening monologue and that’s about it

Basically because animation, as a whole, isn't adult or classy. You can't have an animated character come up on stage with her breasts popping out of her top like you do with real people.

Would be pretty entertaining if what you described happened.

Animation is not the only Genre that is snubbed!!

I generally pay little attention to the Oscar Senility Club after seeing so many films that should have been nominated passed by.

If you come out with an outstanding film early in the year you have little to no chance of winning an Oscar for best film no matter how good it is. If they are looking for the best film than why is this so?

I have heard some individuals high up in the actors guild claim that animation films have only voice actors so these films do not deserve awards since the Oscars are for real actors!.

In these times some of your best voice actors are really good Film Actors!

Anyway....Back to the fun of watching some good and unexpectedly different animation this quarter!

Cheers!!

At least you're looking for something to laugh about The oscars.

Jimmy Kimmel.

Might have been a miss, then again I wouldn't know, he's stale at times.

It's called "Pacific Rim," just uses on screen actors and CGI a lot more than usual.

But if we're talking genuine animation he's been involved with in one form or another:

Book of Life
Troll Hunters
The Hellboy Animations
Megamind
Puss in Boots
Rise of the Guardians
Kung Fu Panda 3

and more to come
