Every time this sort of topic comes up, my first thought is of Yurika, from Invaders of the Rokujyoma. She basically deserves all the hugs.

Then there's Yuiko Kurugaya in Little Busters! I have "Song for Friends" in an anime playlist, and I usually have to skip it every time it comes up.

The first that came to mind for me is Asia Argento of High School DxD.
Just listening to her theme moves me to tears: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OE_CGEtjOzs

In the original novel, Kirito is very much a deeply developed and excellent character, as is Asuna, and they shared a strong bond and romance. Author caved to pressure after the success of the original work and essentially rewrote the it as SAO: Progressive, taking an excellent and well developed romance, adding in a bunch of silly side-stories and additional "heroines", and turning it into basic harem romcom nonsense. THAT is what became the anime.

This is incorrect. Progressive is expanding the Aincrad Arc by filling in the timeskips and was published after the anime began airing. It's Progressive that actually expands on Kirito x Asuna and occurred because of the truncated nature of the original LNs and the anime in regards to the Aincrad Arc. The author wasn't happy with how much he had to skip in the original LNs and is going back to fill in the full story of the Aincrad Arc. He's even pushing for the Progressive to be adapted as a new anime that fully covers the intended story of the Aincard Arc.

So you kind of have it backwards.

My bad, but whether the anime or progressive came first wasn't my point, my point was that the ORIGINAL LN/WN had no extra heroines or romcom nonsense. It was a pure romance between Kirito and Asuna. Also, and it's been a while since I read it so I may be wrong, I remember Kirito as a gloomy, loner type originally, and Asuna was an aggressive, strong-willed, and ambition person, so they made good foils for each other.

Are you sure it wasn't Progressive you read?

The original LN is what the anime follows and has the time skips in question that Progressive is meant to fill out. So it's not the LN you're thinking of. It's also not the WN as that did have the romcom harem and in fact was worse in that regard than the LNs. Progressive delves more into Kirito x Asuna's relationship development and tweaks some details so they meet much sooner in the first arc.

Regardless, the author was never forced to do anything. If anything he toned it down for the official LNs. Him writing Progressive by itself is him wanting to fill in the gaps of the WN/LN and that includes the development of their relationship in the first arc.

Even tho the anime is almost 10 years old (! seriously), Crunchyrool just re-acquired it, so spoilers
