Yes, I was thinking something similar. It felt like the show simply told me they were awesome and I was going to accept it instead of doing much to show me that they were awesome. They came across like dollar store knock offs of L.

As much as I love Deathnote, I think it missed a mark on the addition of Near and Mello. They were both weird additions, especially Mello who seemed like a total waste of time and development.

I won't mention that the passage of time was badly addressed... At one point in an episode the show just jumps years ahead.

It was a bit "Well crap, let's just skip to the end and get this over with" yes. I've never read the manga though so I can't say if some of the faults are on the anime adaption side of things or not.

Concerning the entire Near-Mello arc of Death Note and how it relates to the manga:

I'm going to have to go with the progenitor of the modern concept of the Harem anime, Tenchi Masaki. He is basically like if Shaggy and Scooby Doo got mashed into one character, but also managed to occasionally access the Triforce of Courage.

That explains it... Its like Near, Mello, Matt were a George Lucas prequel moment... "Screw the fans"

The entire premise of Watamote is that the main character Tomoko Kuroki is incompetent.

My thought that Tsukune Aono from Rosario & Vampire is really incompetent till the last episode or so. If not for 2 Vampires, 2 Witches, 1 Succubus and a Snow Woman he'd have died the 1st episode.

Good call, but that was one of those weird situations where you had a light hearted comedy (in this case, a harem rom-com) turn into a hardcore battle manga. The protagonists of those genres have a completely different set of required traits. Hitman:Reborn did the same thing. By necessity, Tsukune at the end was for all intents and purposes a completely different person.

I never read the manga, but I do have the box set on my amazon wish list. If it changed to a battle manga than I am unsure I want to buy it now. I just never really cared for overt and gory violence. But I did love both seasons of the anime.

I'm not sure how much of the manga the anime covered, but it started turning into battle manga towards the end. Rosario + Vampire 2 however, was straight battle manga.
