This is correct. Anime / manga tend to be more about the journey than the destination.

As it stands, I was going to take the easy way out and say Gundam Seed Destiny, but the entire second half of that show is a dumpster fire, not just the ending (... which had to be redone and rereleased as a separate OAV, and that was still terrible, IMO).

Unfortunately, much of the time the journey itself goes no where and ends on a giant reset button so the exact same journey can be repeated ad naseum. Just in case there was any actual plot development that needed to be negated.

As for GSD I....honestly don't even remember the ending. I remember things happening up to the ending but not the ending itself. I assume my mind is blocking it out.

GSD ending

It was pretty stupid, the entire series was bipolar. It started off seeming like it would be a redemption story for Shinn, and it ended up just becoming a circle jerk for Kira and Athrun.

Ah....right. That. >.>

I never liked Shinn. He always seemed like a selfish little asshole that was just retreading Athrun's story beats from the first season but without any of Athrun's backstory or relationships that made those story beats interesting in the first place. Most of the misery and problems in GSD could have been avoided if Shinn wasn't a naive, selfish little punk.

I wanted to like him, primarily because I don't enjoy stories with traditional heroes. I'd prefer a morally rotten character like Light from Death Note over a morally pure hero like Kirito from SAO for example.

Kira in Gundam Seed was pretty good because while he had power, he was also confused and very often being used (primarily by Flay). It made him interesting to me. In GSD though he was pretty much Superman.

I will be the sad fangirl and say I absolutely loved MS:GS to the point I picked up subbing it when the current group dropped the subbing they were doing for the blurays. It was fun and I enjoyed rewatching the entire remastered series.

I've watched GSD countless times also, it's like a yearly thing where I marathon the dumpster fire and watch it smolder. It could have been something great. But so much during it just destroyed the architect of previous charaacters. RIP Cagalli. You were a strong woman in GS, too bad you got turned into a damsel in distress in GSD.

Also Shinn :| I could see what they were sort of going for. The anti-hero mad at the world and wanting to punish those who wronged him, or something of the sort. But he got shoved to the side when Kira and Co arrived. Which was ok, because yes-man Shinn just made me want to facepalm so much. As mentioned, it's like he was wandering along Athrun's story, just worse and confused. Maybe drunk, stumbling around in the dark?

The Gundam 00 movie was kind of a bummer

Ah yes, the movie that nobody really asked for. I felt 00 ended pretty well, all things considering. And then we had to bring in aliens and more subtle undertones of ships that will never sail.

I mean, sure, I can rewatch it and appreciate it for what it is, but it didn't really add anything else to the series besides more questions and such that will likely never be answered.

Master of Martial Hearts. That show was so stupid. The ending made it 1000X worse.

Edit: A couple more I hated was Sekirei, which hinted at a S3 but was never delievered, and Gangsta., which was basically a big "Go read the manga" ending.

Well, Light was a complex character with a clear set of morals even if his morality was ultimately abhorrent. Shinn was the chorus of a Linken Park song that could somehow pilot a giant robot.

I would much rather the anime end the moment it catches up to the manga rather than attempt an Anime Ending(tm).

I remember watching that when it first came out but I can recall virtually nothing about it now although I'm sure it ends in a status quo reset just like every other romcom harem of that era.

It is more than that.

While not related to the conversation, I have to say in watching the final episode, the audio sounded rather bad, as if it were recorded from a speaker in a barrel. I haven't heard audio that bad on something on CR since I watched one of the old Toei titles here.

Oh wow, that is terrible. I wonder if that's an anime only ending or if the manga pulls the same crap.

Neon Genesis pretty much had no ending. I've spent years of study in the university analyzing narrative and there is almost nothing given to make sense of what happened. It was completely disjointed.

Akame ga Kill! was absolutely atrocious in its ending and writing. Like, to the point where I was laughing at character deaths. I absolutely wasn't satisfied in the least bit with how the ending was handled in pacing and in decision making. The show was a train wreck, but hey it had cool action scenes so that's all that matters >_>.

I'd agree with Runec's 3/4 rule though. Newer anime seems to rely on certain anime narrative tropes and story elements. Most of which put an emphasis on sequencing from an episodic perspective rather then satisfying story telling. This is sort of true with all television shows though. Unfortunately the money comes from keeping people watching for as long as possible rather then artistic integrity. Think how many shows you know of in America that follow the Lost formula... *shivers*

Forced filler endings for series anime are the absolute worst imo, its so much worse when anime like Akame ga Kill, Claymore, Gantz, & Soul Eater are faithfully adapted then screw it up completely by adding their own premature endings that suck 100% of the time, I'd take a cliffhanger ending to a series over that crap any day.

Perhaps we should have an "Anime That Stuck the Landing" topic for anime that people think had a good ending. No doubt the candidate list for that one would be shorter, however.

and most of them will probably be anime that were written specifically to fit into the number of episodes produced, instead of adapted from manga and Light Novels.

Mina, if you've watched Guilty Crown then you'd know the horror of a good anime turning into a 'pinky toe hitting a table leg then falling over and hitting your head on the table before finally realizing that you also managed to somehow stab yourself in the gut with the fork you were holding in the process'...
