As the topic suggested, well, this is for the AI

I suppose an important counter to this is "what is a soul". Several religions have various interpretations on such a thing, some say it doesn't exist. So a bit more detail might be useful?

The idea is, being an AI, you are able to interpret the fact that you yourself does not possess a soul. It comes to this understanding through input and outputs, but a machine cannot "think".

And when you ask a machine to work, this realization will not factor well into the machine's emotion, making it unhappy

A soul is more or less something separating you from your humanity.

If you say you have no soul, then you will never move people, you will never connect with them, or even relate to them.

A soul does not mean life after life, or some defining trait about ourselves. It is simply recognizing emotions, recognizing that we as humans see one another as beings that feel and cooperate in order survive and thrive.

A machine does not feel, it is all reliant on how the human takes care of that machine, and in return we can get a feeling from that machine.

A soul is no more real than what we actually believe to be real. I can say we have no souls, but then our life would be an empty vessel. Believing in a soul gives us purpose.

It means you're over thinking things and should pay little mind to the haters.

AI, robots, clones... these do not have souls, however, a soul could occupy it. all those good/bad souls will finally have a place to rest and cause either good or bad intentions. mostly bad, typically most good souls don't lower themselves and take shelter in a vessel, they are powerful enough without a vessel.

It means there exists no metaphysical or physical essence of who you are....whatever that may be. You are just a collection of sense experiences that creates an ego or sense of self that holds steady day by day, but that is a psychological illusion according to the doctrine of anatman.

Souls don't exist. Only consciousness does. Could an AI have a consciousness? I don't see why not, given the technology is there. Any AI with a consciousness should be treated like another being, and not a machine though.

I can't see an AI caring. After listening to a bunch of humans trying to explain what they think a soul is, the AI might well be glad it doesn't seem to have one. After nuking the chattering monkeys.

First we have to discuss about the concept of having a soul.

It means in my opinion that you are an entity existing with a consciousness however primitive in its mental capacities. This consciousness, no the ability to respond in a manner that life does (unpredictability to a degree), is what separates the living from inorganic material such as rocks and mountains. We can program machines to operate in predictable manners but nowhere have we seen the level of unpredictability that a living organism can display.

If we take this thought further and attempt to conceive what an AI would think of itself having no soul would be a difficult task. First the definition of a soul would have to be concrete and understood across the spectrum of all life. Who or what gets to have a soul and how do we know or quantify that are questions that would come to mind.

If we decide that a soul means the life form has consciousness then would a sufficiently advanced AI with the capability of thinking on it's own and having the sovereignty to make it's own actions fall under this definition. Where is the line drawn? who gets to decide what level of sentience or consciousness is classified as what.

Also where does reincarnation fall into this.

IF reincarnation is real... then no artificially created lifeform would be able to possess a soul.

That is if souls only existence in biological life. There could very well be a soul in everything just that not everything is conscious. Some believe the soul of god is in everything and its all connected and when we die it's just a piece of gods soul returning to the original source.

So who knows maybe sufficiently advanced AI will one day tell us they have souls and ponder existentially about the meaning of existence.

And if that day comes who are we to say otherwise. How could we disprove it.

Anywho nice discussion Fred, Good to see your wild FredThreads are still coming.

It just means nothing but thoughts in your brain.

Then it means something....which is thoughts in your brain. Ramble starting in 3. 2. 1.

How do thoughts arise though? Neuroscience shows us we have neurons and synapses that are firing at any given moment and that are brains are electrically charged before, during, and after these "action potential" states which give rise to the protein structures of neurotransmitters that cause our brain chemistry to act/react in certain ways. Yet we are still no closer as to how thoughts, or consciousness arises.

Ramble over.
