Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a work of art, with a great plot that moved from bringing freedom to humans in the underground to saving all beings from total destruction. The second part of it seems cliche, but TTGL did it differently and made it interesting.

Along with the plot is the mixture of genres, all blended masterfully, from the comedic input, the tragedy of character deaths (done Tomino-style), the action of battles that are never repetitive (some scenes, like the Gurren-Lagann's combination are reused, but not much), their romance chains, the drama and then some.

The anime has an excellent character range, many of who get excellent character developments, like Simon's growth from a lowly driller boy to becoming the man who saves the universe, Viral's growth and understanding of what the Spiral King meant to do, the Spiral King's own development, cost him his life twice, but got him to realize what it meant to be a Spiral being and on with the other character's, all of whom display phenomenal voice acting.

The mech designs are original, all of them sporting their faces on their guts, some come out funny like the King Kittan and the Dayakkaiser. Others just exude awesomeness, like the Lazengan, the Gurren-Lagann series and the Grand Zamboa.

The music was done well, complementing the scenes and situations they were used in and Shoko Nakagawa's "Sky Blue Days" was very much Super Robot material.

This is definitely one of Gainax's best works, even if it doesn't quite reach the fame of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is still something worthwhile.

Simon didn't really give up on life, he just moved on as he knew they were all going to go their separate ways. He grew to accept that Kamina was dead and even understood Nia's situation. As well as everything that happened, like with Rossiu.

If he really did give up on life, he'd either be sulking in some hole he dug, or dead in the same hole, but he was actually smiling at the end part.

What Simon did in the last part of the story is very heroic and that truly shows that he's a great man. He even declined the offer to revive his love one because he knows that it's best to leave it that way.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is one of my favorite anime of all time! It's story is so colorful. The characters are very great. You'll enjoy watching every episode of this awesome anime.

TTGL was a great anime in many respects: The animation was stunning, the plot was innovative, to say the least, the music was well synched with the anime, and character development as previously stated by gadeel was great.

I think the part that hooked me was that the bar for each episode only went a bit higher than the last. I also felt that the character development was so well done that the way each character acted elicited my full attention because of my attatchments to them.
I also have to say that before I watched TTGL, I wasn't crazy about the idea of another mech anime because the Gundam series totally pushes the franchise to the limit, but TTGL was original and I expect nothing less of Gainax's work.

If it also helps, TTGL was as crazy (creative and well executed) as FLCL.

I recommend this anime to anyone looking for a good inspirational/adventure/comedy anime

also, I felt the ending could have been better, but I suppose if Simon had continued to rule over the earth, then it would have been cliche. lol

The anime is one of the best one i have ever watched, it has a great plot setting, unique design of characters, and full of action too!...but after finishing the anime, the ending is not pretty good though, it's as if the main chracter has lost the will to fight and just left his friends..

Gurren Lagann is one of the best anime that GIANX has ever made. However, ending was too sad. Also episode 8. But still this is one of my favourite anime.
