Monster. First recommendation. Not really licensed so you can't watch it on Crunchyroll. Crime Drama following a doctor trying to find and kill someone he saved. That person he saved being an extremely intelligent serial killer. Takes place in Germany a few years after the Berliin Wall came down so historical fiction and nonfiction both play significant roles in the main plot. Long series too. Its complex without being convoluted.

Full Metal Alchemist brotherhood is one I'm watching and feel like I could recommend. More of "beginner" anime. Alchemy is a pretty interesting shonen battle system. It takes place in 1914 non-Germany after a genocide.

Kaiji is a good one if you want a beginner gambling anime. You don't need an extensive knowledge in any specific gaming games to understand. The games played are either made up or are simple and explained early on. And everyone cheats in this anime. Its really got this intensity that anime and especially gambling anime as known for. Its a bit ugly looking in an intentional way and there are no girls. Like at all. There are 2 woman in the whole series and one of them was an unimportant shop employee.

Now I'd done with the "serious" ones.

Sabagebu! - Survival Game Club. It was one of my first anime. I watched it because I saw a picture of a Grandma using a minigun. That's kind of all I need to say. It ain't trangressive, progressive, innovative, or non of that. It was stupid fun and I enjoyed it.

Keijio. It you're going to watch one stupid fan service show in your life make it this one. So ridiculous. I hate saying this, but it was my favorite anime of 2016 in terms of overall enjoyment. Enjoyed it more than Re;Zero, Yuri On Ice, and My Hero Academia. It was fun.

Thanks! I also forgot to mention that I was watching Full Metal Alchemist (though that's because I was watching it on Netflix) and a friend also recommended My Hero Acadamia. I'll definitely check them out!

Ahh, yes a good start there.

My suggestions that I enjoyed and you might as well with them being on Crunchy.

Miss Kobayashi Dragon's Maid (Kyoto - 13 episodes + OVA) - A slice of life with a little bit of fantasy and with Kyoto Animation doing it (also producer of K-On which I am currently watching) this is a good show to get into a slice of life. Also where a certain dragon meme that seasonal anime people will know.
Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World (White Fox - 25 episodes) - Properly one of the better of MC getting shifted to another world trope that personally I have watched. There is a tad of blood in this but not too much gore in this.
A Place Further Than The Universe (Madhouse - 13 episodes) - This is an adventure/slice of life and it's not your own ordinary cute girls doing cute things show but its an emotional show.

Those would be my serious ones, now for some that maybe not so.

Eromanga-sensei (A-1 Pictures - 12 episodes) - Yeah, I have avoided this show but some people would like because of the "trash" that it involves and this is a good example of an anime which splits the anime community into two (much like SAO).
Gakusen Toshi Asterisk (A-1 Pictures - 24 episodes) - This was the first show that I completed that I knew was an anime. School battle tournament with a bit of Ecchi on the side.
Urahara (Shirogumi/EMT - 12 episodes) - This is on the form of a unique art style which you can pick up very and trust me this isn't the normal magical girl anime that you see mostly.

A little ashamed to say this but I watched that as well, I think it was the third show I've watched on this site.

School battle tournament with a bit of Ecchi on the side.

I'm not too sure what 'Ecchi' is but from what I've seen (based on show's tagged with this) they're more lewd right?

Once again, thank you all for the suggestions!

Btooom was an anime I started with way back when as well, definitely an odd vibe to it compare to other T.V. shows. It really altered my view on anime as a medium for years to come afterword.

in terms of recommendations I have hundreds of shows I could list here, but to make this more efficient why don't you tell me what about the few anime you have watched do you like/not like?

for example, do you enjoy heavy action? does it need to be gory? do you care either way about how much fan-service is in the anime? do you prefer there to be comedy, and should it be witty or just plain old slapstick? Do you like your MC to be bad ass or wimpy, do you want female or male protags.... There are many different things you could request.

Just give me a loose list of types of things you would like to see in a particular show and I can compile you a list to get started!

In the meanwhile, I would recommend Steins;Gate. One of my favorite shows to date and definitely has that non-explainable "vibe" that btooom also gave me. its a little heavy on the explanations but overall really enjoyable. if you want something more lighthearted to watch definitely go with Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, (simply titled "Reborn!" on this site) its long like hunterxhunter but its suuuper good, just give it 20 or so episodes to get passed the introductions.

Im glad you are getting into anime and enjoying it! im always psyched to hear about newcomers to the medium, anime is great and should be enjoyed by all.

if you ever have any questions feel free to message me on here and ill get back to you as soon as I can!

Hope you are having good day

Angel's 3-Piece is in the style of Ryou.
No Game No Life is in the same genre as Log Horizon, Sword Art Online and Overord.
Eureka Seven is similar to Darling.
Trinity Seven is similar to Akashic.
If you liked BTOOOM! you may like Dies Irae, Live vs. Evil or King's Game.

Others you may like from what you've listed ...
Love Lab
Chaika the Coffin Princess
Blade and Soul
God Eater
Asura Cryin'
Shimoneta
D-Frag
Cross Ange
Blue Exorcist

Oh and just think of Ecchi and Hentai (which you won't find here) as Rated R and Rated XXX. Ecchi is suggestively lewd while Hentai is grapically lewd.

If you can find it. (I think it's on here) The original Tenchi Muyo
It's a classic from before some of its stuff became tropes.

Always would reccomend Violet Evergarden.

Two will do for a start.

but to make this more efficient why don't you tell me what about the few anime you have watched do you like/not like?

To be completely honest there isn't much I don't like. Some nights (like tonight) I'll select a random genre, and chose a random show to watch. I elected to watch Demon King Daimao, and so far it's a little... uh... odd, safe to say. Though that doesn't mean it's bad, it mixes action and some minor comedy rather well, but the nudity can be somewhat overwhelming at certain points (so far).

do you enjoy heavy action? does it need to be gory? do you care either way about how much fan-service is in the anime? do you prefer there to be comedy, and should it be witty or just plain old slapstick? Do you like your MC to be bad ass or wimpy, do you want female or male protags

From what I've seen in the anime I've seen so far, I've like almost every action show/sequence whether it's gory or not (it depends on my mood to be honest). I'm not 100% sure what you're referring to when you say 'Fan Service' so I cannot address that quite yet (whoops ). Comedy in media is a plus if it's there, but it is not a requirement, as some more serious shows it can just out of place. When present (so far) I do tend to prefer witty comedy over that good ol' slap-stick stuff, but if it's used right either can be just as good. Watching some anime where the MC is completely over-powered can get tiring as they sweep through wave after wave of enemies, seemingly without breaking a sweat. I do like when the MC has to develop over the story. The gender of the protagonist doesn't really bother me, just as long as they're an interesting character lol.

Back to the original question "but to make this more efficient why don't you tell me what about the few anime you have watched do you like/not like?"

From what I have watched/am watching I have enjoyed; (in no particular order)
Sword Art Online
BTOOOM
Overlord (===> Those lizard dudes in overloard II were sick)
Hunter x Hunter (so far)
Demon King Daimao (also, so far)
Log Horizon
Bleach
Darling in the FRANXX
Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor
Servant x Service (I've only watched a few episodes, opinion may change)

One thing I want to point out, I would love to explore the Action/Heavy Action genre a bit more, as I seem to be swaying more towards drama and that sort of area.

Once again, thank you all for the help

I have to mention this: Don't watch dubbed series. The voice acting is almost always sub-par. I love Naruto, but I can't take the dubbed ones seriously. Especially Orochimaru's. *shudder* They get a bunch of people that often try to sound like a particular "sound" and all the actors and actresses sound the same. Instead, avoid all that, and go for subbed. You'll also likely get better translation of actual show content. DBZ is way different subbed to dubbed for content. Dunno about Dragonball Super.

Don't forget the various "Fate" series.

Fate/zero and Fate/stay are related. Probably best to watch in order, but it isn't necessary.

Shounen -
One Piece
Naruto (Shippuden and Boruto as well)
Dragonball Z
Dragonball Super
Dragonball (optional)

more "serious" ones as User256 menitoned -

Akira
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Princess Mononoke
Ghost in the Shell

Stole those from another user's list because I wanted to repeat those for emphasis.

This list alone will keep you busy for 3 years. Keep with Naruto. Seems dumb at the start but it really grows into a complex series as the characters grow. They develop all of the characters more fully than almost ANY other anime I've ever watched. Even if it's Shounen, they did a really fantastic job.

I have to mention this: Don't watch dubbed series.

I'm not really a fan of anything dubbed, so I haven't watched any anime that are dubbed. I'm a fan of some documentaries that are in other languages and I've grown accustomed to subtitles (that and all of the much too abundant gaming, lol). One thing though, I've been trying to get into Naruto on Netflix, and I can't seem to get into it. I've watched the first 30-40 episodes and I keep losing interest. Maybe I'll have to give it another go.

All of you are super helpful, thank you! It's about nigh I go to sleep, 4AM here. Night all!

If I repeat some that have already been mentioned, it's another vote for them. Should all be found here on CR unless unless otherwise mentioned. (I think Hunter x Hunter just gets better and better by the way.)

After Gurren Lagann, try Kill la Kill. Then Space Patrol Luluco since it likes to reference those earlier works by Gainax/Trigger. A couple others to check out by Trigger are Little Witch Academia (on Netflix) and Kiznaiver. Their new one is Darling in the Franxx. Oh, and don't miss Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. It's lewd and crude and disgusting and hilarious. (Your mileage may vary.)

OK, here's a variety of recommendations...
Akagi
Cowboy Bebop
FLCL (on Funimation and Hulu)
Gatchaman Crowds
Gintama
Kyousougiga
Madoka Magica
Mob Psycho 100
Mushi-shi
One Piece
R.O.D
Sabagebu! (i'm easily amused)
Samurai Champloo
Shin Sekai Yori
Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)
Suisei no Gargantia (Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet)
