The first episode is now out: http://www.crunchyroll.com/legend-of-the-galactic-heroes-die-neue-these/episode-1-in-the-eternal-night-768377

This is a remake of the original series, so if you haven't had the time to sit through and watch 100+ episodes of the original series, then you'll be fine. That said, you most certainly will want to watch it, and the whole thing is now out on HIDIVE.

Episode 1

And it starts off smack dab in the middle of a tough battle for Reinhard, Kircheis, and company where retreat is probably their best course of action, but they battle on. The characters are given quick introductions, and after some strategic talk, they think they have turned the tables, but quickly realize that something's amiss. Well, I didn't like where it decided to start things off, but it does the job in introducing newbies to Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

That said, there's just no way that storywise, this would match the bar set by the original series as there's just no way to capture the richness of the original 100+ episodes (and extended-length episodes for that matter) in just 24 episodes (this season consists of 12 episodes, followed by a movie trilogy that's the length of four episodes each). Then there's the usage of CG animation, and I'm fine with it since it is restricted to the stuff happening in space. There's no question that on the technical side it's superior, but on the more important storytelling side, this will surely rub enthusiasts the wrong way. In any case, it's designed to introduce newbies into this series, and on that front, the first episode does the job.

So far at least I don't think that too much has been lost in the first episode compared to the original. Overall, Production I.G has done a great job conveying the grandeur of LotGH's space battles. It's not reduced to a random jumble of lights and explosions, you can get a feel for the strategies involved and the flow of the battle.

The real test will come later, to see if this new version can replicate all the nuanced conversations and political intrigue that gives LotGH its true depth. The smaller episode count will certainly work against the new version but it's not impossible for the writing to deliver. Production I.G was the right choice for this project, I can't think of any other modern studio capable of doing justice to the source material.

Great start for the re-make. My biggest concern as being a fan from original is the story has to show that the two main enemies(characters) are the greatest minds in all of anime history period end of discussion no other characters are close.

Yeah, a few of the new shows that have launched today don't seem to be visible in all the usual places. On PC you should be able to click through to the episode from the simulcast /calendar though (or from Crunchyroll's twitter feed).

Edit: Actually, in this case you can also get to the episode from the show page.

I expect the issue of not appearing in queue and on apps will get resolved before too long.

To be fair, Reinhardt’s generals are all pretty much as smart as him. Kiercheis is probably smarter than Reinhardt and equal to Wenli. Oberstein may also be as smart as Wenli and Kiercheis.

From what I saw in the original, Wenli has superior strategic ability, but Reinhardt has better friends and also the ambition to make full use of his resources.

I've only read some of the novels so I can't really compare it to the OVAs, but I think it was a pretty great first episode, and wasn't too bad as an adaptation, though I can't help but feel like it'll feel a bit rushed... That being said, the production value for this are top notch! Especially the space battles. I'm really looking forward to more of this.

Don't know much about this show, haven't read the novels nor the other stuff related to this show. But the first episode was pretty solid, definitely adding this to a must watch weekly

This was beautiful, it reminded me just how much I love Space Anime. The voice actor selection was good as well, Reinhard was actually voiced by Vegeta's voice actor in the original lol.

The one thing that kind of worries me is the ending of the episode. It's quite a bit off the rails and can make the story kind of fall apart if not done right.

I can understand them wanting to pick up the pace since this obviously isn't green lighted for like 120 episodes that are about 40 minutes each. It worries me a bit though, because it really is a pretty central part of the story they are messing with.

Weird, I never even once heard of this series so I was surprised to see it's an older one with quite a history and many seasons under it's belt.

The story sort of sprints straight to the point and gets to the war time theme, even though it looks like they want to go for a heavy dose of some old fashioned drama and SoL character build up. The personalities stand out right away, though some are kind of annoying, mostly because of the big ego from the aristocratic setting that won't be going away it seems. The animation works well and the CGI has a nice effect where it sort enhances the dramatic effect of explosions, creating that fiery shadow effect.
+ points if you learned fires from explosions can't happen in space.
Voice acting is spot on, with a lot of personality behind each character and we're barely under 30 minutes in.

As for the bad, the soundtrack really sucks. The BGM feels very out of place and there's a sore need for some dramatic effect and not some track that sounds like it's from an episode of Hunter X Hunter. Animation is creative, but still unproven. I have my doubts, but for now let's hope they don't keep repeating the same exact scenes and pew pew lasers every episode.

I like the creative world building already and as a Sci-fi fan there's lots of ways to keep this show interesting and only a few ways they could genuinely ruin it from here. There's a very large cast so I'm guessing killing off characters is something they aren't afraid to do. Let's see if the core cast can impress though.
