Ok, this wasn't complete and utter shit like I expected it to be, but it wasn't really that great either.
Considering re isn't that good as a series imo (or well, it went downhill for me) plus the fact that this is gonna be a rushed 12 episode adaptation by Studio Clown (again), I'm not really expecting too much from this season.

Was kinda sad when I read it was only going to be 12 episodes this season. Probably going to cut alot from the manga, don't really remember what happens in the manga considering its been awhile. Definitely can see this being confusing if you haven't read the manga yet.

A lot like RootA we get dropped off in the middle of a pretty chaotic story already in progress. They waste no time getting character introductions out of the way. Some characters seem promising, others seem like gimmicks we've seen all too much like the super OP villain and the comedic relief characters. Right away they get into action, so it's nice to see that this won't be an alternate SoL looking to milk the series by replacing the main villain.

There are already some pretty huge red flags for what could be the making of a shameless copy cat remake; different characters, same incessant doomsday atmosphere that doesn't ever seem to end. One thing that worries me very much is that the very first Tokyo Ghoul invested a lot into character personalities and drama so that people could get attached to the show. Can they really get this done again or will they simply skip the character depth and go for more of an action series? Or they could go for a dramatic mystery more like a horror SoL. I don't exactly like any of the character designs so far, let's see if they can improve or drop a twist that will add some drama. It's not so easy to give a cast depth like the first season did.

I believed in the Crunchyroll-Funimation Alliance. This is a low blow.
It should have gone to Amazon instead.

Read the previous posts. Right now it's under the impression that Funi can't stream it on CR here in the US because of an exclusivity clause Funi signed in 2014 before the partnership started.

Wow. They sprinted through the manga material.
There was a bit of the manga where you questioned who Haise was.

Yeah I read it. It doesn't make me feel any better to know that.
Who knows how many contracts with an exclusivity clause Funimation made for many of their series. Some people has the belief that their favorite anime hosted in Funi are coming soon to CR. At least I believed that all subbed titles would end up in CR eventually.
If all that is true, then Funimation let me down by signing such an stingy contract.

-------------------------------

About the episode, it was pretty good for Tokyo Ghoul standards. The whole thing with Sasaki and the inner Kaneki made me remember Naruto and the nine tails in the early stages of the anime. Good opening song, but forgettable ed compared to People in the Box and Amazarashi's songs.

Forgot the Toru scene in the taxi, amongst others. Showed the masked guy in the OP (manga readers know who it is) This will probs be rushed as well as confusing anime only watchers by making the screech and they ask where Kaneki is and "this isn't really season 3"

Wow, so I’m lost. I’ve watched the first 2 seasons and I’m so lost with this first episode.

Are none of the characters from previous seasons in this?

From those that read the manga, is this a good arc? Any hope this will be good?

I was really looking forward to this but this first episode just caught me off guard. Not necessarily a bad thing tho. Seems like a different show completely show.

soulsinferno

The :Re anime is following the :Re Manga which is a sequel to the original manga Tokyo ghoul. Season 1 was a rushed adaptation of the first part of the original manga and Root A was anime original, it took key points from the manga and ham-fistedly shoved them onto a completely different story. The :Re Anime is basically retconning season 2 completely and attempting to adapt the :Re manga faithfully.

It has been promoted that to understand the :re anime you must first read the original manga Tokyo Ghoul from chapter 1 to 143.
