So far, the world is more interesting than the main character is so I hope they spend some real time on that. Other than that, though, there's a lot to like here. If nothing else it's going to be unique and different (in a sense, I guess, given how clearly retro the whole thing is). Really liking the soundtrack too. Great music choices.

Now this is a really interesting sport anime. I don't much about Ashita no Joe other than it's apparently a highly praised sport series and this looks like it's supposed to be some kind of futuristic version.

Looks like they can cause some serious damage with the gear they wear. I don't think this is the kind of series that will hold back its punches (no pun intended).

I don't watch sports anime. You know why? Let me guess main character becomes number 1? Rinse repeat for all sports anime's.

While it's true the ending is decided before the show even starts, the best moments don't have to be the last ones. For example I dropped Hajime no Ippo early on in season 2 because I felt quite sure I had seen everything it had to offer.

I don't read books. You know why? Let me guess main plot accomplishes a goal? Rinse and repeat for all books.

How many anime there are where you already know from the start that the good guys are going to win? But that doesn't mean they're not fun.

Good sports anime isn't about the fact that they will win or not - though there's a decent tradition of protagonists honourably losing pivotal matches, because after all, as opposite to what happens in battle shounens, it's not a matter of life and death in sports (usually - Megalo Box looks remarkably dangerous though). It's about how you get there. The awesome action, the character drama, and so on. I mean, just look at something like Redline - a "sports" anime movie about a futuristic car race - and try fucking telling me it's ruined because you know the MC will win the race in the end.

Like, yeah, of course, but if you don't watch it you will miss on the craziest, most awesome racing action ever committed to film.

But...you don't know that yet.

Hell, it's less common in sports anime than it is in regular anime. You can't just NOT save the world, but what's even at stake here? A children card game? People lose all the time in sports anime. It's a sport, they can try again later!

Not even sports MOVIES always have the protagonist win. Did you not see Rocky?

A million times this.

And then some.

VA is awesome. Digging the style, the music, and the appropriate absences of background music – quite impactful. Love that it's not catering to kiddies.

Exciting start.

I knew I was going to follow this series after the first couple of minutes. Gritty retro look, attention to detail, interesting setting, and tight writing poured over characters that ooze personality. Nothing is wasted; every frame is art.

If this keeps up, it's going to do what Boku no Hero Academia did and remind me why I started watching anime in the first place.

I'm in.

The first episode reminds me of the beginning of Shammo.
