Definitely not the ending I was expecting. I was hoping for a dramatic battle with a spine tingling ending, instead we got a slugfest with the old time freeze for a really long dialogue about the inner "you". Kind of upset they ruined such a well structured story with just a few seconds of screentime. Still, it was the journey that was most exciting.

The art and pacing had a nice consistency, but looking back I do feel that a lot of things were shaky at times. Most bothersome for me was the very weak character profiles and supporting cast. Sachio had about 10 minutes of backstory and no one but Aragaki really had depth to them, even Joe. The best of the animation was strictly limited to the ring, with some stiff movements going on elsewhere. The epic scene in episode 2 or 3 had me going nuts (was it CGI?), but they never brought it back. The story was unbearable at times and very unrelatable. At least we had a very special soundtrack in this one, I'm dying to get my hands on it and will keep an eye out.

Overall it was a cool experience, but it bothers me greatly that they kept it so small the entire time. A massive futuristic city with a massive tournament, millions cheering, yet somehow the town feels empty? Where are the characters? We saw a lot of nameless street people and even hired goons, but the town never really felt alive even if the art expressed it otherwise.

Far from perfect as it may be, it was still fun to see it in action. I'll admit that if either the art or voice acting had been awful I'd be complaining the entire season. I'd give it a solid 8.5/10. It could have been much better in a few areas, and they did have their share of blunders/mistakes.

Who'd think I'd watch a sport themed show all the way through (let alone one about boxing).

For sure there were some elements that left me cold but all in all I felt drawn into the world and was glad to have put it on my list.

Was a bit disappointed that the ending "pulled it's punches"
. But surprisingly I'm OK with the way it turned out and still consider it the best show of the season (Golden Kamuy leaving too many questions till season 2).

I can name SO many different anime that does NOT follow this formula.
Phantom of Requiem
Shiki
Crybaby Devilman
Gurren Lagann
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Akame ga kill
Your Lie in April

The list goes on and on. And in my opinion, are some of the best.

I was kind of right... kind of? Joe did win in the end instead of the double knockout I thought they would go for, and it wasn't 100% clear if Yuri joined Team Nowhere to run the Gym with them (I figured they would open a boxing school to some degree together).

It was a really great show and sometimes following a person from the bottom to the top can still be suspenseful.

What a show! Defiantly a surpise of the season and a good contender for ATOS

If I were to rate this, it gets a 9.5/10.

I'm so not into sports, be it anime or real life, but when I watched this whole series, I could help but compare it to the original Rocky. Joe evoked many of the same emotions I felt when I watched Rocky way back in 1976; the underdog overcomes the odds, but it is clearly not without a price. The music was perfectly paired.

I do have to say, that ending was underwhelming. Yes the anime overall is probably one of the biggest names this year, but I'm certain it didn't handle the final fight's ending as well as it could have been. (Also Sachio in my opinion is irrelevant to the story in the grand scheme, shame really.) At the end of the day though nothing is perfect, but this one still came out swinging this season.

On one hand: the conversation between Joe and Yuri was effectively concluded when Yuri decided to remove his gear. The final fight was much less a clash of ideas than it was an acknowledgement between fighters simply for the thrill of the fight.

On the other hand: that was one hell of a slugfest, and the ending felt good, if a bit fluffy for the grit shown everywhere else in the show.

Overall, the show didn't want to be Rocky, and did it's own thing. Probably one of the most consistently fun to watch shows of the season.
