I really like this, but not being too big in the sports genre I'm hoping there ends up being some out of the ring conflict and fighting no matter how likely or unlikely that may be lol.

I wish she hadn't called off Yuri on the highway for at least few seconds.

I'm really digging the cowboy bebop vibes and I love boxing movies. I'm going to have to check out the old anime that this is based on.

Anyone know if the motorcycle is based on a real model?

Lovely art style, very 90s. Somewhat reminiscent of Cowboy Bebop or Wolf's Rain. Has the 90s aesthetic gone so far as to lead the show's creators to put it together in 480p though? The subtitles are nice and sharp but everything else is a mosaic of standard definition pixels. It's pretty ugly.

Is this a mistake from Crunchyroll or a deliberate choice?

This is my favorite anime this season so far but I also wondered this. The art style wasn't a problem but it did seem to be 480p. Not a dealbreaker for me whether it's intentional or not but I did have to check my resolution when I watched it.

The great art in this also reminds me of the wonderful 80s anime movie Venus Wars.

I had forgotten how great anime used to look. Nice that it's so obviously hand drawn too, and with plenty of character. Watching hideous CG stuff like the new First of the North Star prequel is depressing.

Not into the sports genre at all but this has pulled me right in. Getting a strong Samurai Champloo/Afro Samurai vibe from the art, tone and music. Beautiful writing and pacing, they really packed a lot into this first episode without it feeling rushed or forced. I just hope it maintains this overall level of quality in the long run.

It's not 480p. Looks closer to 720p, but it looks exactly like this on TBS. I do not know their broadcast resolution.

Edit: that aside, this show has a ton of promise. I've seen the first episode like four or five times so far. That old school animation style is amazing, the music is on point, and story looks fun (even if it's an old one). Also, that ending theme (かかってこいよ) is fantastic.

Looks like Ippo Makunouchi meets Cyborg, I might check it out (for the next Anime Challenge). The character in that picture kinda reminds me of Mugen from Samurai Champloo.

Episode 2

And Yuri shows why he's the champ and JD is nowhere in his league. Even so, JD is determined to beat Yuri someday. As with every good sports anime, a moment of humiliation comes at the beginning, and that happens when he gets a taste of the real deal Megalo Boxing. Even before that, he has quite a long road ahead just to enter Megalonia. But seeing that he's a stray dog that he's going down fighting no matter what. Pretty good episode as it's doing a great job in establishing this rivalry, as well as motivating JD in a big way.

Episode 2

This week we have the match we have been waiting for and it did not disappoint. Yuri being the champ gives Junk Dog a handicap and will only use his left arm but Junk Dog's request goes all out and knocks him out with one punch. If Junk Dog ever wants to fight Yuri again it will have to be in his ring and for that he must enter Megalonia. In order to get into Megalonia he asks Nanbu to help him register but refuses as he doesn't have a citizen id. Well things get complicated when Junk Dog doesn't throw a match and gets Nanbu and himself into trouble. In order to make up for this mistake Nanbu promises the reward for winning Megalonia and so the boss helps him get a citizen Id and Junk Dog gets a new name Joe.

Damn it, JD, you could've at least given yourself a surname. Worst fake ID ever.

In seriousness, though, show's great. I was anxiously awaiting this episode so I could make a real judgement on it, and boy did it deliver. Yuri vs. JD mk.1 was a treat (at least, as much as one-sided fights ever are). Gives JD a chance to show what he's capable of before Yuri's class shines through. The entire episode has set everything up perfectly, so the signs are good. Soundtrack continues to match the tone of the series impeccably, art style is incredibly moreish... nothing I can say that people before me haven't done to death already. Here's hoping that all continues; I could use a series like this during exam season.
