Oh good, I'm not the only one who immediately thought of Ryoga.

Anyway, I was pretty ambivalent toward this. Like, I didn't think it was bad, it just didn't really catch my interest. Maybe it was because there was too much 'explaining the game,' or that the main characters didn't really do anything until the end. I don't know. Maybe the next episode or so will give me something. We'll see, I guess.

So far better then the main SAO series already. LLENN's facial expression in this episode though lol.

Oh look you said the west doesn't do military moe, but this is a anime.. anime comes from japan.... yeah.... I fail to see why you would come to a anime site if you aren't looking for Japanese stuff...

Er, anime is not homogeneous and at no point did I indicate I felt "deceived".

P chan fires faster and has more ammo than it should. Definitely a video game weapon. like her speed.

What I want to know is WTH M is carrying in that ginormous pack and all those pouches.

I feel the same way. I think I was expecting Llenn to be like Sinon in terms of skill and tactical knowledge instead of basically being kind of a newb. I'll have to adjust and go into the next episode with a different expectation and see if that helps. (Based on her outfit it makes me wonder if she's been playing PvE and this was her first PvP experience?)

This is a spinoff from the Phantom Bullet Arc .

I haven't read this one.
But from this episode , we see a lot of action and short intro of the real player behind little pink and her P90
Its ok but not interesting yet

What I've enjoyed about the SAO anime series is that the main chracter/central focus character is someone who is dealing with issues in their life; or in the cases of Sinon & Yuuki, is using the game as a way to deal with trauma.

I've never been one to subscribe to the theory that Kirito is OP simply because he's an MC. They laid the groundwork for him & his abilities very well. The only portion where he's legit OP is in the ALFheim Saga; & that was easily explained by a system glitch & lazy programming by the game devs, which does happen in real life.

That's why I'm slowly drifting away from anime, just constant, shitty un-original shows which exist purely for the sake of making money, the projects that are worth caring about don't receive any funds, the industry is corrupt and entirely obsessed with money and profits than it is with quality, individualism and most importantly innovation, the good shows are becoming increasingly scarce with time, the industry is killing itself, why support a failing and corrupt industry?

So, I know I may be a little bit late to this conversation, but I have a quick question.

After you guys have all seen this first episode, what are your thoughts? Would it be wise of me to watch the SAO Gun Gale arc before watching this Alternative arc? Is there information from the original story that I would benefit knowing in preparation for this new story? Basically, am I missing anything by not watching the original?

(As a sidenote, I don't care much to hear folks telling me how trash they think Gun Gale is, I just want to know if there's any pertinent information that I would be missing otherwise.)

Doesn't seem to be any connection to me, at least so far. I'd be surprised if there weren't cameos and whatnot at some point but in the first episode it's so geared towards a new audience that it's actually too over explained.

I don't feel you need to see the original to understand what's happening. If you've even a passing degree of experience with FPS games the mechanics are what you'd expect only in a VR environment. So far none of the characters connect back to the original and the exposition at the start gives a rundown of the game's history.

I expect cameos of some sort, but there's not a ton about the game itself particularly unique aside from being a full-experience VR piped through your brain.

The basic rules were like other shooters. The timed satellite scans are there to let everyone know where others are on the ginormous maps. Aiming has a built-in assist mechanism, but different guns have different accuracy levels. Bunch of skills and abilities available, all sorts of equipment, some vehicles. It's primarily (only?) PvP, open to the entire world, and there are often real-cash prizes for winning tournaments.

I thought the first episode was okay. For how heavy it was on exposition I would have liked to see them introduce a decent amount of support/secondary characters. I really hope the series doesn't just focus on M and LLENN/Karen. Really want an explanation for that speed as well.

I'll keep watching simply for the fact that I can spare half an hour every saturday but I don't think it's going to be anything more then mediocre.

I think I saw somebody state that. She is not a pvp-er and after getting into it recently she ends up loving it and becoming "known".
